FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE Star Mads Mikkelsen Opens Up On Replacing Johnny Depp

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Mads Mikkelsen has opened up on the process of replacing Johnny Depp, explaining why Grindelwald's change in appearance is never mentioned in the movie.

Colin Farrell was first to play Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, though we'd later learn that the villain's true face was, in fact, Johnny Depp's. The sequel showed us more of his interpretation of the Dark Wizard, though it was very much just another "weird" Depp performance.

Following his very public divorce and subsequent legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, Warner Bros. made the decision to enlist Mads Mikkelsen to take over the role. Fans welcomed the news, but Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore never acknowledges Grindelwald's altered appearance.

"That was very deliberate," Mikkelsen tells THR (via SFFGazette.com). "Everybody knows why [the actors changed]. The entire world knows why. It would almost be like an Easter egg to reality to point out we swapped actors. Hopefully we drag them in with the first scene and from there they accept this world."

The actor also addressed previous comments about wanting to speak to Depp before taking over the role, clarifying what he meant. "I wasn’t like, ‘Oh please let me talk to him.' It would have been great to touch bases, ‘clean the room’ in a sense. Maybe I’ll see him in the future."

"It was quite chaotic," Mikkelsen said of the rushed process of joining the Fantastic Beasts franchise following Depp's dismissal. "You don’t want to copy anything [Depp was] doing - that would be creative suicide. Even if [a role has] been done to perfection, you want to make it your own. But you still have to build some sort of bridge between what came before."

While we didn't love the threequel (you can read our review by clicking here), Mikkelsen is a highlight and we'd like at least one more movie to see what else he can do with the role. However, it's become clear in recent days that the franchise's future hinges on this instalment's success.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is now playing in theaters.

Can get them not explaining an actor change but...

where is his white hair and weird eye?

that is not something that has to do with having a specific actor

mads is a better fits forthe franchise and the previous look was just goofy looking but was still bullshit to fire depp for the reason they did and they already made the design choice. why change it without reason.

Michael gambin and richard harris didnt look alike but they still maintained the same look

@dracula - the eye is still there, you can see it in the banner, they just toned the color down a lot. No idea why they change the white hair to streak in the front, should have kept the whole thing just toned down to his sensible haircut.

Kill these movies (the way the BO is looking so far they may indeed be dead soon). Should’ve been about Dumbledore and him from the jump. The Fantastic Beasts are an unfortunate afterthought now.

I do wish he has the signature white hair look, plus theres in universe reasons why he could look different so its a bit sad it isn’t addressed.

This may be another case like the Divergent series. Finished before the ending cuz of low BO on part 3. Terrible

I think WB was wrong for dropping Depp from the franchise the way they did, having said Depp was mist casted to began with. Mads definitely fits Wizard Hitler more then Depp did. Depp's gotten in a bad habbit of making characters weird for the sake of it, just cause you have a diffrent colored eye or you move your hands in weird ways does not make your character interesting. Mads seemed to bring more weight to the character.

The film is disappointing for a harry pothead film at the boxoffice💁

Ironically, it seems like Johnny Depp actually dodged a bullet here. This movie is turning out to be a franchise killer from the early box-office numbers.

Please will often still go and see a bad movie. It's the sequel to the bad movie that needs to be worried. As we are seeing here. Same thing with Suicide Squad. I bet Wonder Woman 3 is going to have a tough time too.
