KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD Character Poster Shines A Spotlight On Jude Law's Evil Vortigern

Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is finally set to open this year on May 12th, which is exactly one week after James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The date might not exactly be ideal and in the past, has proven to be unkind to a number of films, including Shane Black's critically acclaimed The Nice Guys just last year, but considering GOTG Vol. 2 will begin screening in international markets ten days ahead of its North American debut, there is certainly room for King Arthur to succeed, especially if it garners a warm critical reception.

The picture stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) as the title character with a supporting cast that includes Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eric Bana (Hulk).

Check out a new character poster below:

Plus, here are new promotional photos from the movie's official Twitter account:

Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to the epic fantasy action adventure “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Starring Charlie Hunnam in the title role, the film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne.

When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

I'm actually looking forward to this. Braveheart aside I've always hated stuff set in the middle ages, especially when fantasy is thrown in. It usually takes itself too seriously but comes across very silly, and has plenty of silly names for places and people said in very serious voices. Quickly, Tharamig of Lagashakaboomboom, son of bigusdickus and heir to Huga Ruga Puffenstuffa!
Game of thrones somehow is the only thing that pulls it off, even with khaleesi's self-serious ass and eighteen titles. Actually it probably pulls it off because of her self serious ass. Mmmm. Anyway this looks like it's throwing some much needed badassery into the era. The trailer with Zeppelin's 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' sold me 100%.

I don't give a shit if his jacket is unrealistic for the time period. It'll be nice to see a fantasy movie and not feel like that kid from Role Models.

Also, the superhero genre could use a film with some of this badassery thrown in. Characters like the Punisher but with more personality and some superpowers. Bit of classic rock and you're set. Guardians has hints of it, as did Logan.

Give me a superhero that's basically Spike from Buffy that can fly and shoot fire or some shit.

I'll probably see this at some point, but nothing I've seen from this has really wowed me so far.
Astrid Berges-Frisbey, tho...

Did anyone like The Young Pope...? I was 6 episodes in and eventually kinda lost interest due to other shows that were on.

Is no one else bothered by the fact that the title would sound way better if it was "King Arthur: Legend of Excalibur"? Just me?
