The Lord Of The Rings: The Shadow Of The Past Paused By Skydance — Is It David Ellison's First Victim?

Stephen Colbert was fired from The Late Show for calling out CBS and its relationship with Donald Trump. Now, with David Ellison in charge of Warner Bros., his Lord of the Rings movie is on hold.

Earlier this year, the news broke that Warner Bros. Discovery was moving forward with The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past. The Late Show host Stephen Colbert and his son writing the script alongside franchise veteran Philippa Boyens.

Set fourteen years after the passing of Frodo, the movie's story revolves around Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.

The idea was met with both scepticism and excitement, with many fans eager to pick back up with these iconic Middle-earth characters. Some questioned the necessity of the story, and they will likely be pleased to learn that the project may ultimately fall by the wayside.

According to Knight Edge Media (via SFFGazette.com), Skydance—the merged Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures—has decided to hit "pause" on the movie. The idea had been to film shortly after The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum wrapped production, so what's gone wrong?

Well, we don't know exactly, but as the site points out, the Skydance-owned CBS fired Colbert from The Late Show due to his commentary and opposition to President Donald Trump's administration. David Ellison, meanwhile, is thought to be one of Trump's biggest supporters. That seems the most obvious answer, especially as Colbert has openly mocked the Paramount owner on air.

It also appears the studio is understandably eager to see how The Hunt for Gollum performs before going all-in on another live-action movie, which could be a result of the tepid response to Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the animated The War of the Rohirrim's box office struggles.

Peter Jackson announced that he'd found a "very special partner" to develop the next Middle-earth-set movie, revealing that Colbert, a J. R. R. Tolkien superfan, was developing a sequel that is rooted in chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that didn't make it into the 2001 movie.

"The thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in ['The Fellowship of the Ring'] that ya’ll never developed into the first movie back in the day," Colbert said at the time. "It’s basically the chapter 'Three is Company' [Chapter III] through 'Fog on the Barrow-Downs' [Chapter VIII]."

"And I thought, 'Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story. Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?'"

We'll have to see what happens, and much likely hinge on The Hunt for Gollum's box office success next December. For now, stay tuned for updates on The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past as we have them.

While I am diametrically opposed to Trump, and not a LOTR fan at all, this seems more like a sensible business decision than an attack on Colbert.

There's something off to me about spin-offs of dead author's works as well. Comic books are different because you always had myriad writers and artists putting a spin on them, but LOTR and Dune were sprawling but self contained works by one author, and all these spin offs lessen their prestige.

@Why - well , Dune was also written by his son too if I’m not mistaken and there are stories about it being released still or atleast until 2022.

LOTR i can understand more but this is still using the basis of what Tolkien wrote in regards to specific chapters and expanding them via new material to tell the story so its not wholly original either

@TheVisionary25 - oh I know Dune is based on Herbert's "notes" (though I don't think Prophecy was), but I recall someone from Stoker's family writing a sequel to Dracula that was god awful. I know it's all cashing in on a brand and that is basically what the entertainment industry is about but it's just so cheap.

@Why - I hope it gets canceled. Colbert is a LOTRO super fan, but he is also not someone who should be writing a LOTRO project. His celebrity status is how he got this project. A project he and his son were writing together. Just pathetic.

@Truebeliever333 - I mean I am a Batman Superfan, and I love Queens of the Stone Age. I am not suggesting I should be writing Batman comics or guesting on the next QOTSA album but I wouldn't turn it down. Would it be better no? Am I famous? Also no.

@Why - I doubt they approached Colbert. Doesn’t make sense that they would. More likely he was looking for something after his show was cancelled.

The days of vanity projects being made for the fun of it are far behind us it seems.

@Truebeliever333 - Skydance is one mistake away from bankruptcy; they don't have a choice.

Hopefully it gets canned. Hunt for Gollum already sounds bad enough as it is, no need to bring in Colbert's political axe to grind in this (as well as his nepotism, wtf does his son have to do with writing a LOTR movie ??)

These guys do not [frick] around. They won't [frick] around with DC either.

It sounded a bit forced anyway and I’m both a lord of rings fan and not a Colbert hater

I wouldn’t be surprised if something political was at play in the larger picture if Colbert’s LOTR movie has been put on hold , especially since he just said at the Emmys that they were still writing the movie so Ellison putting this on pause as one of his first actions seems dubious to say the least…

However I could see them waiting to watch how Hunt for Gollum
does too before moving forward but considering that the movie doesn’t come out for now until December 2027 (same day as Secret Wars) , that seems like too long of a wait because what if that movie is well received and does very well but then you nothing to follow up on that momentum quickly which Shadows of The Past could do hence why i do feel there are some shenanigans at play but we’ll see.

Anyway , i am a bit more interested in this then Hunt for Gollum but i honestly still think something like Rings of Power is more interesting since it’s not trying to squeeze the juice out of chapters in the book but telling its own story by using LOTR & the appendices as the basis for it so hopefully Jackson gets access to more stuff like the Simarillion and Unfinished Tales of Middle Earth & Númenor happens sooner then later as he has said he’s trying to do!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Colbert got himself and his son hired to write a LOTRO project despite them having no experience writing a feature film and you think pausing it is political?
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/5/2026, 1:59 PM
@Truebeliever333 - it’s not like he’s writing it with just his son alongside Phillipa Boyens who co-wrote the LOTR & Hobbit films so they had a guiding hand there so it’s not like they were just on their own.
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/5/2026, 2:18 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Sure. But, how did he and his son get the project? I hope it gets canceled. Colbert is a talented guy but there are better writers available, ones who aren’t already multi-millionaires.
