Saoirse Ronan joins The Hobbit!

The Hobbit casting director Ros Hubbard spilled the beans that actress Saoirse Ronan is attached to the upcoming fantasy film. No word on what character she'll be playing at the moment.

Saoirse Ronan has joined the cast of The Hobbit, according to an interview with casting director Ros Hubbard conducted by The Irish Film & Television Network.

Though her part is still unknown, Ronan is listed alongside fellow Irish actors Aidan Turner and James Nesbitt.

Hubbard says:
"[W]orking with Peter Jackson is like working with a family. So they’ll have a great time. Saoirse’s family will go too. Everyone is very close and very loving on those sorts of jobs. It’s not like typical studio movies at all."

Ronan received much acclaim for her role in 2007's Atonement, including a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination. She previously worked with Jackson in 2009's The Lovely Bones.

New Zealand-based production on The Hobbit has been slightly delayed due to minor medical concerns with Jackson, though it is expected to begin soon.

Hmm... An elf maybe? I don't recall any female characters in The Hobbit at all, but I'm not sure what plans they have for the "extended plot."

How the hell do you pronounce Saoirse anyway?

@ HawHaw, Ser Sha. There are no female characters in the book..except maybe a Goblin wench! Apparently a female elf has been written in to the story though..

She's reported to be a young elf maiden named Tilda (or something like that). Don't bother speculating as to which Tolkien character she is, because she's a PJ creation, kinda like Lurtz. They only have rights to The Hobbit and TLOTR (and its appendices) so she cannot go beyond the scope of those titles.

I predict she will aide Bilbo in freeing the Dwarves from captivity and later manage to help him during the battle of the five armies. I HOPE I AM WRONG!!!

She does have a young Cate Blanchet look about her, though.

My suspicion is she will either be a Mirkwood or Rivendell Elf.
