THE DARK TOWER TV Series One Step Closer To Becoming A Reality According To Showrunner Mike Flanagan

We were beginning to think it might be little more than a pipe dream, but based on new comments from filmmaker Mike Flanagan, his small screen adaptation of The Dark Tower is beginning to take shape...

2017's The Dark Tower could have been a great movie and was supposed to be the beginning of a new franchise telling stories in theaters and on streaming. Unfortunately, it was a total mess that not even A-List leads Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey could save.

As a result, the property - which is based on a phenomenal series of novels by Stephen King - has fallen by the wayside and interest in Hollywood waned. Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill HouseDoctor Sleep), however, remains attached to a streaming series he hopes to make a reality.

The filmmaker acquired the rights to King's epic sci-fi fantasy tale last December, so it's clearly still early days. In past interviews, he's confirmed the first episode's script is completed and revealed his adaptation would run for a total of five seasons. He's even received an endorsement from the prolific author.

During a recent interview with Variety (via SFFGazette.com), Flanagan confirmed he does indeed own the rights to the project and shared perhaps the most positive update yet.

"We’re on strike but I’m very optimistic," the filmmaker tells the trade. "We have great partners and I think it’s going to happen."

It's a minor update, yes, but one which suggests this is more than just a pipe dream or one of those adaptations which will forever be talked about but never materialise.

Flanagan makes no mention of whether the series may have provisionally found a home, though it may still be too soon for that. It's also unclear when the director would be able to start work on it as his next project is The Life of Chuck, another King adaptation starring Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill.

Incorporating themes from multiple genres, including dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror, and Western, The Dark Tower tells the story of a "gunslinger" and his quest toward a tower, the nature of which is both physical and metaphorical.

The series actually established King's Multiverse and in doing so, links together many of his other novels (long before Hollywood caught on to the idea).

That Mike Flanagan Clayface rumor was always too good to be true imo.

Mike Flanagan desperately wants to make a Freddy film and I don't know why God won't allow it to happen💁

Damn I had no idea he wanted to do Freddy. He’s easily one of my favorite horror directors at the moment. Didn’t watch that last one he did for Netflix but Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep, and Haunting of Hill House were all home runs.

@AmazingFILMporg - I haven't heard this but sounds great. I always thought NoES was a series they could still do interesting stuff with compared to franchises they ran in to the ground like Halloween and Leatherface.

@luigi

He would be great. He spent a year and a half talking to Heather about it and outlining a story with her. She was in his latest show midnight club so I'm sure they discussed it alot. I hope the rights holders are listening 🖖

@AmazingFILMporg - I thought how cool a Freddy movie with Nick Antosca would be. Anyone who has seen Channel Zero knows that Antosca is the man who can make Krueger terrifying again.

Wow! You saw that? I thought I was the only one🙂. It was a creepy show. The ending was alittle underwhelming but overall the show was great and creepy AF😳

@Repian - Can't say I have heard of that show, is it any good?

@marvel72 - The first three seasons are 100% recommended and the fourth is a bit weak. It's creepy and Nick Acosta is a genius. He is involved in SyFy's Chucky Show.

hey, has anyone seen the pilot episode of the Dark Tower that Netflix finished, then scrapped? I'm dying to see that pilot.

@Demigods - There’s a woman who has a website devoted to King’s work, maybe more than King-Lina’s Library. She was able to see it and gave it a thumbs up. They had made some changes, I think adding some other two Roland’s original ka-yet, a person of color and a girl. Other than these changes, I think she said it was a brother faithful adaptation Wizard and Glass. It’s been a few years since I read the review but that’s what I remember. I think she also expressed disappointment that it hadn’t been picked up so I think she thought it was good overall.

@Demigods - Me too, but I hope that Flanagan will be able to do it and will do right by the book series since he’s passionate about it.

Mike Flanagan is the only man I trust with Stephen King's stuff. Midnight Mass was a superior version of Salem's Lot. Haunting of Hill House might be a better Shining.

Soooo.. will the studio allow them to make an accurate faithful take on this iconic book series?

Or will they change it to pander to every imaginable minority group they can think of and ruin it? Again.

I doubt this will even happen, but if it does, will Hollywood even allow them to do it right?

May be a little too traditionally good looking but let the man have Oliver Jackson Cohen and he can cook as Roland. If not, he’s definitely tall enough to pull off Randal Flagg and maybe snag Sam Heughan after Outlander wraps up this year. Actually, I may like that better

@inkniron - not quite the mix of Stephen King and Clint Eastwood but it could work. RF? Sacha Baron Cohen would be great but outside the box Josh Duhamel might crush it.

*SPOILERS for anyone who hasn't read the first book*

Although the general public may be aware of The Dark Tower novels, it isn't as well known or popular as King's other books like IT, The Shining, Carrie, etc. With an adaptation you have to have a hook that'll lure those people in and keep them watching.

A good way to do that would be for a 2 hour first episode covering the first quarter or so of the novel with additional flashbacks of Roland's training and his time in Gilead.

Then you end that episode with the Tull massacre. The "shocking" ending will be all anyone will be talking about. Roland killing every resident of the town will also show off his skills as a Gunslinger and how brutal he can be. End it on that note and you know people will want to keep watching.

@DanielPlainviewsGhost - That would also help with keeping the series limited to the 5 seasons like indicated in the article if they get through the first book quickly. Its a quick read too, compared to the others, so it's feasible to end the first season part way through book 2.

Mike Flanagan is phenomenal. I love all his stuff. He’s like Taylor Sheridan. Great writers with great vision.
