UPDATED! Stephen Colbert Dressed As THE HOBBIT Characters Bilbo, Gandalf & Legolas

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies could be the last time we visit Middle Earth. To help say farewell, Entertainment Weekly has issued three special covers featuring super-fan Stephen Colbert dressed as Bilbo, Gandalf and Legolas.

Stephen Colbert spends most of his time on his late night talk show The Colbert Report as a faux right-wing pundit, but every so often he drops that persona to let the genuine Stephen come out and play. It is most noticeable when he gets to show off his encyclopedic knowledge of all things J.R.R. Tolkien. It is so impressive that it even earned him a cameo in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

“Tolkien’s work has been a lifelong haven for me—truly a light in dark places when all other lights went out,” Colbert wrote in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. “For an awkward teenager, Middle-earth was a world I could escape to. Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth also gave me a world to escape to, but by the time his films came out, I was rich and famous and didn’t really want to escape my life anymore. Still, great movies.”

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Colbert had Jackson on his show last year and blew him away with LOTR trivia. Dude knows EVERYTHING about LOTR, down to the last, most obscure detail.

I'm going to miss his right wing conservative blow-hard character when The Colbert Report ends next week but he's going to kill when he takes over for Letterman. Dude's ridiculously intelligent and funny as hell.

Dude's a freaking douche.

Only time he has ever been funny was on "Strangers with Candy".
