Angela Bassett joins the cast of Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern" opposite Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong. She will play Dr. Amanda Waller, a scientist who's a staple of the DC Comics series.

Shooting recently started in New Orleans with Donald De Line producing and Martin Campbell directing. Greg Berlanti is also producing and wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green Michael Goldenberg rewrote the script.

Bassett is planning to make her feature directorial debut with "United States," based on the novel "Erasure" by Percival Everett adapted by Dwayne Johnson-Cochran for Bassett Vance Prods. Bassett is also producing with Johnson-Cochran and Courtney B. Vance.

Finally, a reason for me to go see this "DC" film.

My grandmother is personal friends with Angela Basset. She lived in my city, St Petersburg Florida years ago.

They really dont like the idea of casting a larger size woman for the role.. even on Smallville they couldnt bring themselves to do it.

Great find. This is FANTASTIC news for the future of DC's film franchise. I wonder if she realizes just how important the character she's been cast as, really is?

Great news. Though I'm a little saddened by the lack of CCH Pounder, but Bassett can act, so what the hell? I'm fine with it.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up for a DC crossover but awesome to see Waller on the big screen and played by an awesome actress.

This is big news folks. Waller means crossover. The only reason she would feature in GL's first film is for that reason..be it Suicide Squad or whatever, its happening... probably:)

I'm not familiar with the character but Bassett is a great actress! A lot of casting news from DC today...it's like they're trying to compete with the media frenzy surrounding Evans being cast as Cap! :P

I mean, it seems like DC's answer to Marvel's Patrick Stewart. As in, an actor who looks literally exactly like the character, and can act the shit out of the role as well.

Not knocking Bassett, she kicks ass, just seems like such a no-brainer. Eh, what can ya do? Bring on Bassett!

I would have loved to see her play Storm in X-1, She would have delivered the true badass Storm can be.

@Ror: I don't know if I'd get my hopes up yet. There's a big difference between character cameo easter eggs and making a whole DC movie universe. Weren't they, however, talking about a Suicide Squad movie at one point? I would've actually loved Bassett as Storm when she did the Tina Turner movie.

Great news! I love Angela Bassett! Classy, sexy and talented actress. Doesn't bother me they aren't making Waller heavier set. I'll compromise and take Bassett any day!

...I always think Angela Basset is the right person for STORM in X-Men. Nothing against Halle Berry, but Angela has 'grit' and 'noble warrior looks' that fit STORM..

If Mrs.Basset comes on the set in her usual fit form
she's not going to do Amanda Waller justice looks wise.

We all know she can bring it acting wise I just wish
they had've casted someone heavier like Queen Latifah.

CCH Pounder would be perfect for the role of Amanda Waller, as far as look-wise. Bassett is a great marketing decision for mainstream people, so I can understand their decision. Though she plays an important role, it is a secondary role and her physique isn't critical to that role.

So not only is she going to be a human-size thinner but also ripped. I've always loved Bassett. She was always my fancast for Storm until a few years ago.
Despite the drastic physical difference between the actress and her character counterpart, she'll nail this role.
