The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that New Zealand actors Temuera Morrison and Taika Waititi have been respectively cast as Abin Sur and Ferris Air engineer Thomas Kalmaku in Martin Campbell's space epic Green Lantern.

Morrison, a Māori originally from North Island NZ, is most well known for his portrayal of Jango Fett (and his clones) in the Star Wars prequels and video games.

Waittit, who hails from the East Coast region of NZ, is a film director, writer, painter, comedian and actor. His short film "Two Cars, One Night" was nominated for an Academy Award.

As most fans know, Abin Sur was the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. After being attacked by the villain Legion, Abin is mortally wounded and crash lands on Earth. He then dispatches his Green Lantern ring to find a worthy successor; which turns out to be Hal Jordan.

Thomas Kalmaku is an engineer at Ferris Aircraft, where he mentors and befriends Hal Jordan. Due to his Inuit decent, he is derogatorily referred to as 'Pieface' by several employees of Ferris Air.

Green Lantern begins shooting in Louisiana today.

They should have gotten a Native American to play Tom Kalmaku. It kind of pisses me off.

Regardless, as I said there these seem like some pretty unimpressive actors in comparison to who was cast in Thor when that started filming! :P

josh@ i cant imagine abin sur will do much more than die so doesnt much matter who plays him........the other guy will probably be some comic relief, but since most of the movie is allegedly in space his role will be small as well, so im not worried that thier not high caliber actors.

RIGHT ON SCHEDULE!... JUST HOW I LIKE IT!

GUNS @ I agree with Clark Duncan. My number 2 choice is Dennis Haysbert (Pres. Palmer on 24), who voiced Kilowog on JL/JLU. As long as they dont ink the role with that corny dim witted persona. Kilowog is a fierce warrior. And should be depicted as such.

I'm down with Jango Fett as Abin Sur.

Would have preferred Bill Nighy though.

Vin Diesel is the voice of Kilowog!

Okay, I know I'm going to be ridiculed for asking this, and I admit that I'm not exactly up to speed on my GL mythos, but I have a question that's bothered me for years. If the power ring allows the wearer to fly through space, why was Abin Sur ever in a spaceship?

m2prod - That is a great question! I've never seen Green Lanterns use a ship as a method of space travel. What gives?

I wanted Ron Perlman for Kilowog, but Conan will most likely get in the way of it. Are most people assuming that Kilowog is going to be a CG character and not a live character? With make up and prothesis I don't know why it can't be a live actor. That is why I liked Perlman for the role. He looked good as Hellboy and could pull of the same for Kilowog.

@superdog

Yeah, Sur may die early, but there may be flashbacks. I seem to recall (though I am, by no means, an expert on the Green Lantern mythos) that there were several other Corps members that were resentful that Hal had gotten Sur's ring. Not that Hal was unfitting, but that Sur had been a paragon to the Corps, and that Hal's presence was another reminder that their hero was gone. I could easily see some form of databank-type messages being reviewed, perhaps even some of Sur's old case-files. Who knows? Morrison may have a longer part than you think...

They could have done better for AS, and Kalmaku for that matter, but whatever. I haven't seen the Kalmaku guy act though.

Dennis Haysbert/Clancy Brown for Kilowog.

Not to be a jerk, and I typically agree with a consensus that a representative of the character's origins should be upheld, but how many Inuit actors are out there that can fit the profile? It can't just be any Native American, the features of Inuit tend toward more Asian features than that of more common Native Americans with whom we have become familiar. Though the choice is strange, I can see how they can make him work.

@Multi and Tyler: Thomas Haden Church or Patrick Warburton to voice Kilowog! hahaha... wait, that actually doesn't sound too bad.

@LEEE: your obsession w/ Bradley Cooper is starting to come across... a littllllle... GAY! not that there's anything wrong w/that!
