The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that New Zealand actors Temuera Morrison and Taika Waititi have been respectively cast as Abin Sur and Ferris Air engineer Thomas Kalmaku in Martin Campbell's space epic Green Lantern.
Morrison, a Māori originally from North Island NZ, is most well known for his portrayal of Jango Fett (and his clones) in the Star Wars prequels and video games.
Waittit, who hails from the East Coast region of NZ, is a film director, writer, painter, comedian and actor. His short film "Two Cars, One Night" was nominated for an Academy Award.
As most fans know, Abin Sur was the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. After being attacked by the villain Legion, Abin is mortally wounded and crash lands on Earth. He then dispatches his Green Lantern ring to find a worthy successor; which turns out to be Hal Jordan.
Thomas Kalmaku is an engineer at Ferris Aircraft, where he mentors and befriends Hal Jordan. Due to his Inuit decent, he is derogatorily referred to as 'Pieface' by several employees of Ferris Air.
Green Lantern begins shooting in Louisiana today.
