Peter Sarsgaard is in negotiations to play villain Dr. Hector Hammond in director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, reports Heat Vision.

Sarsgaard would join Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively in the Warner Bros. comic book adaptation, opening in theaters on June 17, 2011.

Peter Sarsgaard

Dr. Hector Hammond, created by John Broome and Gil Kane in the early 1960s, originally appeared in Green Lantern (vol. 2) # 5 (March-April 1961). Unlike many supervillains, Hammond does not use an alias.

Hammond's abilities include genius level intellect, potent telepathic and telekinetic abilities, and he occasionally displays the ability to absorb and mentally redirect the Green Lantern's emerald plasma.

Good news though. The info I had on my article that was tossed was interesting. Sounds like we get Sinestro and this guy. Let me look the info up again.

I really hope Hammond is not the main villian in this movie it would really suck. Hopefully he is just in the background during the Earth scenes like Dr Connors in the Spiderman movies. Like some Douche bag that has a thing for Carol Ferris.

@ecks Yeah I wonder how far they will take the villian. Perhaps he will just be some dude. Don't know if they will get him that duplicate ring.

This is from comicvine.com:
When Hector Hammond first appeared, he was a normal but genius, man who found a meteor that increased evolution. He used it on four scientists and weakened their wills so they had to obey him. He used their futuristic knowledge for his own purposes, and gave the scientists little credit, if any. Hammond gained noteriety and acclaim for 'his' discoveries which brought him to the attention of the Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. By chance, he was able to steal a duplicate power ring and dueled with Green Lantern. However, he lost their fight and wasn't seen for some time.

The next time he was seen, Hammond escaped prison and evolved himself through exposure to the same meteorite he previously discovered. Because his will was not crushed, he gained mental powers. He also made himself immortal, but at the cost of losing mobility throughout all muscles of his body including those responsible for speech

There's a few other storylines he was involved with but I have a hunch this is the direction they go.

@Dmon.
Legion is going to be the main villain, Hector is going to be a side-villain (just for the earth scenes)

@ Diamond and Leee I know it will have Sinestro and supposedly Legion I hope so. I just said that because Hammond has always been my least favorite GL villian.

this seems fine but it's jus that Thor has literally converted me lol. The news on Thor is tremendous compared to GL which seems not all too exciting for me. Gl is like 3rd place for me in most anticipated films but once i see the casting for sinestro then i could go back to Gl fanboyhood.

i think not making sinestro the main villian in this movie was a good idea, makes a good build up. Maybe throw him in there for a few minutes maybe :)

I agree with you UltimateSpidey, the GL saga is so rich that you could have at least 1 or 2 other good sequels if they are done correctly. Lets hope the acting is good enough to propel the story properly.

THR’s Heat Vision blog reports that Sarsgaard is in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond, “the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes” and eventually develops powers of his own after contact with a meteor. Those powers include mind reading and mind control, depending on the version of Hammond in question.
