Sarsgaard Reveals More About Green Lantern

The actor set to portray the villainous telepath Hector Hammond briefly discusses his excitement for the upcoming film.

SciFiWire caught up with Peter Sarsgaard at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where they asked how he feels about his first comic movie project:

"It's something completely different for me and something that I've not done before. I imagine that if I'd done 10 of them I wouldn't be as excited as I am, but it's not the kind of thing that I normally do. It feels expansive to me. It feels like shackles being taken off instead of being put on. I just feel like I can do anything with this role."

Hammond was never considered one of Hal Jordan's A-list villains, and many comic fans are still wondering if the character will be center stage in the film. Hammond's most infamous trait is his enlarged head; does Sarsgaard know if that physical aspect will be included in the film?

"I can't really talk much about it, because we have to protect it, but it's a very, very fun role, and I just don't get the opportunity to play a role that is so expansive and delicious—and it really is!"

The actor goes on the say that, though he wasn't familiar with the villain's comic history, he wasn't taken aback when he first saw the original incarnation. "No, I think it's awesome!"

I wasn't sure about Hector Hammond being the villain for the first film, but for it to differ from GL: First Flight... It isn't that bad of a choice. Sinestro will be perfect for the 2nd GL. EPIC SPACE BATTLES!!!

Yeah, Hector Hammond isn't a really big villain, but at least Sarsgaard is gonna be in it. Besides, they have so many other things to do in the plot: 1)Abin Sur's Death/Hal gets his ring 2) Introduction to the green Lantern corps. 3)Oa 4) The guardians of the universe 4) Sinestro 5) Hal's Relationship with carol.

It's a lot. A C-list villain isn't too much of a problem. It's all about how they integrate him into the plot. Just look at Iron Man. Whiplash and Iron Monger aren't A-list villains, but are made just as important or interesting as the A-list villains by how they advance the plot. Either way, this movie is gonna be epic

Peter Sarsgaard is gonna kick ass. Hector may not be much of a major villain type, but I really like where this is going.

They introduce Hal and how he gets his power.
Abin Sur shows just one of the many aliens of the vast GL Corps.
Carol Ferris is going to be one of Hal's obstacles along the way since later she is to be Star Sapphire, who will cause major emotional impact with Hal.
Sinestro is the mentor figure, who Hal will trust and become reliant on.
The father of Hector Hammond is not to fond of his own son, which makes Hector such a mad man.
Hector becomes the villain.
Hal learns his abilities by fighting crime.
Society begins to praise this new hero.
Hal wants to hide such power from Carol fearing she might fear him.
Hal makes constructs like flowers to make Carol trust him.
Hal is sent an urgent message from his ring by Oa that risks the sector of our galaxy.
Hector begins to reek havoc in society and Hal won't let him continue.
There is a threat outside of earth which Oa must stop called Legion.
Hal chooses to stay in earth to stop Hector.
Oa fights off Legion and we see Sinestro's badass constructs along with Kilow and Tomar and others.
While Hal prepares his plans on stopping Hector he receives update on Oa.
Hal goes to Oa and sees that many of the corps members are dead.
The Guardians are quite hesitant on whether Hal should truly dawn the ring.
Kilowag is pissed and says you poozer, you could've helped us.
Sinestro just stands in the argument and observes Hal's responses to the terrible outcome.
Hal says I did not ask for this ring, it was given to me by Abin Sur, so if you want it back then take it, I've had enough of this crap!
Sinestro is intrigued by Hal and says it was not Hal's fault. He has another problem on sector 1214 on earth from another threat.
Sinestro wants to watch over Hal to evaluate him more and the Guardians allow him to.
Hal returns to earth and discovers that Hector has visited Carol.
Carol tells him and Hal becomes cautious.
Hector makes of mess of society and Hal fights him.
Before he fights, he says the oath.
The fight commences.
When the battle is over Carol gives Hal a smooch.
Hal's ring informs him to return to Oa for a meeting with the GL Corps and the Guardians.
The corps members and the Guardians saw Hal's will power in defeating Hector.
This makes them accept Hal as a member and to be trained by Kilowag in Oa to enhance Hal's power.
Sinestro glares at Hal for his praise from the Guardians and the corps.
Kilowag tells Sinestro to cheer up since the poozer may have potential.
Sinestro looks at Kilowag and whispers not yet until I see it.
Carol, on earth wonders how Hal is doing.
Then he appears outside of the Ferris airbase telling her that he has much more to do.

I think it will be great to save the training for the sequel and Sinestro's treachery.

@Multi
no I never read emerald dawn. I only read secret origins and the recent runs of Geoff johns lol.

I just wanted to share my take of it. Yeah the animated film was horrible. I will read emerald dawn when i have time I've heard only good things about the arc.

I had no idea that you poopooed First Flight. I loved it for what it was. Of course for an animated feature it would abbreviate and augment. But for live action, you know it would totally have to stay true to character closer than that of animation. Because of the deviations, did you also hate JL(U) TAS?

It does feel like a movie. So I don't know why they can't serialize it into a saga that would transcend into a JLA film.

BLAMMO!

Hammond has an enlarged head? Interestng repetition of the word 'expansive' in that case.
Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this.

He's gonna have a big head.

It's good to leave a comment on this that actually has something to do with the post. Last time TeaBag posted the infamous valentine's day picture that made my mind go blank. I still have nightmares about that picture. Thanks a lot TeaBag!

@Growler: I took notice in the exact same word, why is he using it more than once. But I think it might be me and you who are reading too much into it.

@Multi: I enjoyed First Flight, but as tea points out it feels rushed and no portable lantern batteries is just wrong. They could at least have Kilowog holding one. And of course the no ring interface was something I actually expected - It was not in Justice League: The New Frontier(or maybe I just cant remember), but I definitely thought they would include it in First Flight.

Oh, and I think it is about time I read Emerald Dawn, it seems that no matter what GL-related article I read people are telling other to go read it.

The goddamn batman gets his ass handed to him every 5 minutes... wow. I'm speachless. How can a company that's been building the legend for years and years, shoot themselves in the head like this? How could that have gotten past the brainstorming stage??? They went straight for the cerebral fart.

Ok. Ok. I suppose if it were a Flash movie and it deviated that much, I suppose I would be ticked off as well. But until Blackest Night and Flash Rebirth came out, I hadn't read any comics for about 20 years (About shortly after they killed off Allen :D). So when First Flight came out, I was more tolerant due to lack of being in the loop I guess. Maybe my memory was shotty. But as far as fantasy/Sci-Fi goes with a DC character, I was satisfied. But I do understand and appreciate your points now that I thought about it.

I'll still watch it again. :)

MultiPurposePoni @ Did you notice in the first flight cartoon that the rings were seriouesly underpowered at times. I mean 4 GL's to stop a runaway ship? GL is supposed to be a match for superman. I could go on with other things that annoyed me about that cartoon but it would just take far too long.
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 2/17/2010, 4:39 PM
Multi@ Your right man! Clancy Brown is definitely a better choice, but i have to disagree about Donald Sutherland because i think that Hugo Weaving would be a much better choice for Abin Sur. Just a opinion!:)

Ps. I really want to see Amon Sur in the first film! He and Hector Hammond would be a f*cking great bad guy team in the movie!:) Luke Goss or Jamie Bamber(From Battlestar Galactica) for AMON

Let's just hope the live action film will not deviate too much from the GL mythology. Also, I hope Martin Campbell plans on making the GL corps seem tough and like Multi said, not like the GL First Flight where the rings' power was toned down to lazer beams cus that's not GL. Nova Corps use beams of light or supernova powers, but not the awesome GL corps. BTW I hope Marvel does not plan on making a Nova film cus there are many issues that can go with that since it is basically the same concept of GL's story but with different names and beams of light rather than willpowered constructs. Anyways, it is pretty obvious that Thor will be the victor in 2011 and the greatest CBM of all time and hopefully surpass the box office success of AVATAR, which wasn't all that great. Even though Thor will most likely squish GL with his mighty hammer, I want this film to be great and rank in more bucks than Ironman give us a future of great comic book film making.

Don't worry people,Legion is also going to be in it.So there's still gonna be epic space battles.

I hope they changed that to Atrocitus though.
