Benicio Del Toro Joins The Cast Of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; Is He Playing Thanos?

Benicio Del Toro has joined the cast of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy in a lead role which will reportedly also see him star in future Marvel Studios movies. Could he be playing Thanos? There's no official word on that just yet, but hit the jump for details!

As Guardians of the Galaxy gets closer to beginning filming this summer in London, the cast continues to fill out with extremely impressive actors. Following the announcement that Glenn Close and Karen Gillan will star in the movie, Deadline now reveals that Savages and The Wolfman actor Benicio Del Toro has joined the cast of the James Gunn helmed movie in what they describe as, "a character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies." Del Toro lost out on the lead villainous role as "John Harrison" in Star Trek Into Darkness, so what do you guys think are the odds that he will be playing Thanos in both this movie and subsequently Joss Whedon's sequel to The Avengers?

@GodButcher every great actor has a bad performance(s). Marlon Brando in that one weird movie with Kilmer, George Clooney as Batman, Al Pacino in the 2000s, Nicolas Cage paying off the IRS, etc.

Damien Porter was just put in as a nonspeaking stand-in for The Avengers. They said long ago they have yet to cast Thanos

Maybe he's playing 'Thanos' but not forgetting there are other villains in the Marvel Universe, not just 'Thanos'.

Wow! As much as I'd like to see Daimon Poitier to fill in for the role, Del Toro as Thanos sounds REALLY great. Whatever the role, though; even if he isn't going to be the Mad Titan, this is still going to be very good.

and doesn't GOG already have it's villains with Karen Gillan and Lee Pace? I hope they don't overcrowd it.

But either way, he's a really talented actor.
I hope he shares some scenes with Glenn Close, that'd be cool.

Wow, this dude is one of my faves! Wasn't that excited for GOTG, other than it is a link in the Phase 2. Now it just became a must see for me.
