Marvel Studios And Fox Swapped These Characters For DEADPOOL And GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

When Fox wanted a certain character for Deadpool, they had to give Marvel someone who will now take on a huge role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Hit the jump to find out who got swapped!

During a Deadpool Q&A this weekend, it was revealed by writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese that they only chose Negasonic Teenage Warhead to be Colossus' "sidekick" because of her name, but surprisingly, the character ended up bringing some complications with her. While Fox obviously own the rights to the mutant, the duo realised they needed to change her powers (in the comic books, she's a psychic), and that ultimately led to them having to ask permission to do so from Marvel Studios.

Rather than just saying yes and moving on, it seems Kevin Feige and company used this to their advantage as a superhero swap took place which resulted in Marvel getting their hands on Ego the Living Planet! That's a character who will play a key role in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"Kurt Russell [‘s Ego the Living Planet] in the new ‘Guardians’ movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead powers," explained Wernick.

It's now hard to wonder which other characters may have been swapped in deals like this and what Marvel would have done had they not been able to get Ego. Star-Lord would have had a different father for starters, but this just shows that the two studios can indeed work together when they want to. Now, it would be nice to think that a similar deal could take place for characters like Galactus and Silver Surfer, but those are unfortunately two Fox probably won't so easily decide to part ways with.

I wonder if this was an out of context joke, isn't Ego a Thor character and NTW a New Mutant?

@Luigi - Ego was indeed first introduced back in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's legendary Thor run.

I can't even bring to mind that many appearances of Ego in an X-Men book.

Seriously. There was this one Exiles story, this one time. And maybe a few others.

This is indeed odd.

Why would they have to ask to change Negasonic's powers, anyway?

Makes you wonder if they had to ask whether they could change Deadpool's powers in X-Men Origins - Wolverine.

Ego first appeared in a Thor comic, though? How would fox own Ego, maybe the wording is wrong, maybe Ego in the film had the same powers as Warhead so they swapped or something like that, because I really don't see how FOX would have this character.

@ScarletWarlock - certain things go into character rights cuz Black Panther first debuted in Fantastic Four

@HerculesJones - True, but I always thought of Ego as a Thor character, whereas Panther very much is in his own franchise. No biggy anyways, we got Ego, let's just hope something else good comes out of this swapping biz.

@ScarletWarlock - doesnt always matter what they first appeared in. some of the characters got packaged together because they went well with the main characters that the deal was for(in this case the F4). an example is fox getting wilson fisk with daredevil even though he was first a spider-man villain. or black panther and the inhumans who both first appeared in F4 comics. or even wolverine who first appeared in a hulk comic. we like to think that these deals are just blanket deals where they get everything associated with a set of characters but in reality we have no idea just how complicated they are. we get glimpses every once in while with the quicksilver, scarlet witch, and skrulls sharing, but i imagine thats just the tip of the iceberg

@lemric - I understand that bit, but I don't think has ever been a significant part of any of the fox properties they own. Ego consistently appeared in Thor comics throughout his history, it just seems like if it were to go anywhere it would be with Thor. I feel there is one slight detail missing that throws it into the X-Men and FF spectrum.
