THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Makes MCU Debut In THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY HOLIDAY SPECIAL Cameo

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrived on Disney+ today, and it features a blink-and-you'd-miss-it cameo from a member of The Suicide Squad's Task Force X. Check it out after the jump...

After briefly parting ways with Disney, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn made the leap to Warner Bros. to develop both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker

While the former's box office success was limited by the studio's decision to release it on HBO Max at the same time as in theaters, it was a critical smash. Peacemaker, meanwhile, was also a hit, and arguably remains the best DC TV show we've seen in a very long time.

Gunn made his Marvel Studios return to helm both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, with the latter arriving on Disney+ today. Once the movie is released next May, the filmmaker's relationship with Marvel Studios will once again end when he returns to Warner Bros. to take charge of DC Studios and the DCU.

The director has already brought a Peacemaker star into the MCU by casting Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, and an actor from The Suicide Squad also showed up in the Holiday Special!

You may have missed him, but Javelin actor Flula Borg plays the bartender who serves Mantis and Drax when they visit Earth. It's a minor cameo role, but a fun moment for those who remember his gory demise when Task Force X returned to our screens last year.

We'd love to know what led to this cameo happening, though we have to assume it was just a chance for Gunn to spend some time with one of his friends on the set of this Christmastime tale.

"A seasonal showpiece for the amazing Pom Klementieff as Mantis, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is James Gunn’s Marvel masterstroke, and the best Holiday Special ever made," we said in our review of the second Marvel Studios Special Presentation. "A merry Marvel Christmas miracle, it doesn’t get any better than this."

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is now streaming on Disney+.

@heisei24 - He is. He plays a drunk on Knowhere at the 29:54 mark.

@Skestra - He's not a drunk on nowhere, he's a disheartened former somebody with questionable drinking habits that has chosen a secluded place in space because he no longer trusts the universe or his place in it.

@Lokiwasright - no, like most marvel projects it was generally ignored by the public and was a complete financial failure.

I noticed him and chuckled. When they show the cartoon Drax and Mantis hopping across the Map of the Stars, they also show pictures of Margot Robbie and John Cena. There’s also a joke about Batman.

It's cool that he got to cameo in both the movie and the special.

I didn't think watching this I'd get the most compelling argument for superheroes killing people.

I just watched it. And I'm definitely disappointed. I probably shouldn't be because it clearly says Xmas special. But I was hoping for something a little more in line with werewolf by night. Just more of a story other than the Kevin bacon thing. Maybe a villain or intro to a new character of worth. To be fair it's what was advertised tho. Good family 35 min show about Xmas I guess. Could've gone without it honestly. Kinda over the top cheesy.

@Tpo81 - i’m really glad you posted this because i’m 20 minutes into it and wondering how people are praising this. every single beat is contrived and they are forcing the performances so bad that it’s becoming hard to watch.

i absolutely love Gunn and everything he’s done for Marvel - but how did Josh call this a ‘masterstroke’? so far it seems to be in line with almost every other phase 4 entry which is not a good thing at all. all that said - werewolf by night was brilliant. one of my fav MCU additions of all the phases.

@maxx - Well, I hate to give Wilding too much credit ever, but this special does great at what it's supposed to do. Be a pitch perfect Marvel version of those cheesy, overacted, forced, overly sentimental Hallmark style Christmas movies. I have no doubt Gunn is being genuine, but this IS satire. He is successful on that score for sure. If you have watched (or been forced to watch) those movies, then this is right on.

@maxx - maybe you didn’t get the holiday special part. It was a fun romp that gave us a little bit more of 2 characters often overlooked. Go watch Violent Night when it comes out dude.
