BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Rockets To Biggest Thursday Evening Opening Of 2017
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is taking aim at a Captain America: Civil War sized debut after posting a massive debut in North America on Thursday evening. Hit the jump for further details!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicked off its North American box office run last night with an awesome $17 million on Thursday evening. That's a big upgrade to the original's $11.2 million back in 2014 and this marks the biggest opening of 2017 to date. How it will fare this weekend now remains to be seen, but it's currently on track to earn at least $150 million this weekend, a downright amazing result.
The sequel is entering its second weekend in a number of territories after opening in 58% of them last week. As of right now, the movie has scored over $150 million from international audiences, so it should soar past $400 million or more by the end of this weekend. Will it reach $1 billion when all is said and done? It seems likely, but we'll have to wait and see as it's obviously still very early days.
