THE SUICIDE SQUAD: James Gunn Explains How The Final Scene Parallels The Last Shot Of GOTG VOL. 2 - SPOILERS

It's been a few weeks since The Suicide Squad was released, so director James Gunn is now happy to discuss some of the more spoiler-y aspects of the critically acclaimed DC Comics film.

During a video interview with IGN, the filmmaker was asked about the final shot of the movie, and whether it deliberately parallels the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Just in case you need a recap: The finale of the MCU sequel finds Rocket watching fireworks blaze across the sky as the Ravagers pay tribute to the fallen Yondu, while The Suicide Squad ends with Bloodsport petting Sebastian the rat as he snuggles into his lap.

The obvious comparison stems from both scenes featuring cute, furry creatures, but Gunn feels that there are indeed some other similarities here. The sequences represent the respective characters recognizing the good in themselves, and facing the uncertain future with a sense of hope. Check out the video below for more.

The Suicide Squad is set for a Premium Digital debut on September 17, before it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD arrive on October 26. Do you plan on picking up a physical copy? Drop us a comment down below.

I was so disappointed by this movie based on the reviews it was getting.

@thewanderer - me too :/

Not saying it was bad, but it was painfully mediocre. A few funny moments, but overall, i much preferred Birds of Prey. No idea why anyone would be interested in that Peacemaker show either

@thewanderer - your prerogative. Best cbm in years and the reviews agreed. For great reason.

@Tpo81 - it got ridiculous critical acclaim because it was ridiculously fantastic. HBO Max killed its BO before it even released.

@McMurdo - exactly.for anyone to say that movie was horrible is ridiculous.I didn’t like a few things in the movie like deaths of certain characters just for the sake of killing characters for shock or whatever.But I still had a blast watching it.I thought it was funny & I thought the overall story and acting was great.Some forced jokes here and there but still.Awesome movie I’ve watched it 3 times.I really hope we get a lot more of it.HBO max stopped me from seeing it the night it came out and I’m positive I’m not the only one.So the narrative that this movie was a failure is something I’ll never be convinced of.Not as good as gotg but much better than gotg2.Bring on Peacemaker

@Tpo81 -
It was on-par with many MCU films, no doubt. People on this site like to act like everything Marvel does is some sort of cinematic masterpiece, but a sizeable chunk of the MCU since Guardians of the Galaxy has been braindead entertainment. This is really no different.

One of the best cbm’s in years. It’s a [frick] you to test audiences type of film and you won’t see another film like this, with a creator behind it getting this much freedom to bring his/her vision to life for a long time. All the characters were truly fantastic. So much heart with Ratcatcher and Bloodsport. The obvious theme of there being at the very least a SHRED of decency in even the worst of us. We all can do good if we WANT to. Great [frick]ing film what a ride in theaters!

Second best comic book movie of the year behind Shang Chi

@dracula - the Starro third act shits on soul sucker cgi beast IMO and there is just better characterization/character moments in the final act of TSS in comparison to Shang Chi. I put Shang Chi below it solely for the third act. Cuz otherwise Shang Chi was [frick]ing amazing

@McMurdo - I really don’t know which I prefer, which is a problem I don’t mind having, but definitely think Shang-Chi’s third act pales in comparison to Suicide Squad’s

@McMurdo - I respectfully and strongly disagree.

Loved this movie! Not always a fan of movies deconstructing a genre, but I thought it was fun and that was all it wanted to be. I loved that the characters were in their outrageous costumes the whole movie. It had really cool action sequences and a lot of heart. The most fun I’ve had watching a cbm since endgame.

@DenimChicken - happy to hear you felt the same as me! What a movie to see in theaters! Easily Gunn’s best film IMO on characterization alone.

The Suicide Squad is easily one of my favourite DC movies of the MoS-and-beyond era (still calling it DCEU), with Shazam probably being the only one on the same level of appreciation. It wasn't without any flaws, but it had enough heart and fun action to make you look past minor imperfections. Overall it was an absolute blast.

Also it gave me some of my favourite DCEU characters. Like, at 3 of my top 5 might be from this movie. Plus my favourite Harley so far. And 2-3 character deaths I cared more about than Superman's.

@Kyos - Never thought about it that way. We all knew Superman would come back, so maybe that played a role, but I can’t believe I felt more at the losses of Rick Flag and Polka Dot Man lol
