Earlier this year, the news broke that Columbia Pictures is planning to squeeze new life out of the Anaconda franchise, with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican set to helm a reimagining of the 1997 giant snake horror movie.

Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Ghost Busters: Frozen Empire) and Jack Black (Borderlands, School of Rock) have now been confirmed to play the lead roles, and according to Deadline, Daniela Melchior has also joined the cast.

Melchior was most recently seen in the Road House remake, and also made a memorable appearance as Cleo Cazo, aka Ratcatcher 2, in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

Gormican will also co-write the script with collaborator Kevin Etten.

The project is said to have been in development at the studio since early 2023, and has gone through numerous rewrites as the "filmmaker and Columbia tried to find the right balance of tones."

It sounds like this new take on the creature feature is going to be more of a meta comedy, as "a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals."

According to the original report, "Black would play an erstwhile director, a man stuck in his job as a wedding videographer, while Rudd would play an actor who did a stint on a cop show but sees his Hollywood dreams slipping further and further away." However, the trade notes that "another source said it was the other way around."

The original Anaconda was actually a pretty star-studded affair, with Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz and Jon Voight heading into the Amazon in the hopes of getting an elusive tribe on film, only to wind up being hunted by the world's largest snake. It wasn't exactly well-received upon release (41% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 24% Audience Score), but it has gained something of a cult following over the years.

The movie spawned a number of direct-to-DVD sequels and eventually crossed over with the Lake Placid franchise.

What do you make of this news? Any Anaconda fans out there? Drop us a comment down below.

"Filmmaker Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez) is traveling deep in the Amazon jungle looking for a forgotten tribe. Terri and her crew, which includes an anthropologist (Eric Stoltz) and a cameraman (Ice Cube), come across Paul (Jon Voight), who is stranded on the riverbank. He offers to help them find the tribe, but his secretive behavior puts everyone on edge. They realize too late that he's using them to find a legendary anaconda that's worth a fortune -- if they can catch it."

Be PG-13, no doubt.

Yes, I know the original was too.

@IAmAHoot - I could see it being R since this director and writers last film was that too.

@TheVisionary25 - Paul Rudd and Jack Black alone lead me to believe they will go for bigger box office draw first and foremost. Plus, the would-be plot description. Granted his past two
movies were rated R, but didn’t have these two actors headlining (I know his other two movies had big names, but it’s not quite the same as this).

This one seems unnecessary. The original has not aged all that much. The only thing is that the CGI was a bit primitive.

I enjoyed “Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” so the same team being behind this means this could be fun aswell but we’ll see..

I haven’t seen any of the Anaconda films but a more comedic take could work as long as they retain the elements of action & horror from atleast the original which going by the premise and report seems like they will.

I would give it a shot especially with Rudd , Black & Melchior as 3 of the leads now since I like them!!.

Rudd and Black seem a bit too old to be “remaking their favorite movie from their youth” if that’s the case. I mean, Owen Wilson is literally their friend, how young could they have been when they saw Anaconda?

@BruceWayng -

"You must be joking"

"If I was joking I would've said a horse walks into a bar and the bartenders says 'why the long face?"

I don't know why but that gets me every time lol.

@bcom - Those flicks and the Naked Gun movies are a reminder of a simpler time, my friend…I’d actually even go as far as to say the first two Scary Movies and Not Another Teen movie deserve plaudits as well…

@BruceWayng - I see it. Hot shots 1&Deux were amazing and hold up really well.

@BruceWayng - Agreed. The Hot Shots movies are probably the closest a relatively modern comedy 'franchise' has come close to matching the wit of The Naked Gun and Airplane movies. I haven't seen any of the Scary Movie movies so can't speak for those.

I'm open to it.
Melchior and Rudd have a thing for playing lovable warm characters. Black's got heart and does at least have Kong from his history.

I'm hoping the aim is to set up a cast that you don't want to see die.

@Slotherin - I just read that summary of the premise that's reported though and that sounds... Not great...

I hope they go with a Prehistoric Titanoboa type of story. Call it an Anaconda sure but allow the viewer to question the authenticity of the creature.

In my opinion Jack Black hasn’t made a good movie since Pick Of Destiny. With him flopping so much here lately we’ll never get The Bong Of Destiny.

let me guess; This must be the Anaconda remake but with comedy vibes, just like the new Jumanji.
