GOTG Director James Gunn Reveals That Darkhawk Almost Made His MCU Debut In VOL. 2

Before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hit theaters, a rumor did the rounds that Darkhawk was set to appear in the sequel. Now, director James Gunn has co9nfirmed that the character was considered.

Back in 2017, speculation arose that Darkhawk may be set to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 after the character was spotted alongside the main team members as part of a Marvel Legends action figure line. Director James Gunn dismissed the reports at the time, but it seems there may have been some truth to the rumor after all.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Gunn confirmed that Darkhawk "almost" made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the GOTG sequel.

Darkhawk, aka Christopher Powell, was introduced back in the early '90s in a self-titled series from by writer Tom DeFalco and artist Mike Manley. He'd later appear in the likes of New Warriors, Avengers and The Runaways, teaming up with Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Guardians at various points.

We have no idea why Gunn ultimately decided against utilizing the hero for Vol. 2, but both he and Adam Warlock showing up in Vol. 3 seems like a long-shot. Gunn did recently confirmed that the upcoming GOTG Holiday Special will introduce a new character to The MCU - could it be Darkhawk?

Specific Vol. 3 story details are still a closely guarded secret, but a few nuggets have been revealed over the past year or so. We do know that Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will be a big part of the movie, and a recent report indicated that her relationship with Nebula (Karen Gillan) is going to be the main focus. Of course, this Gamora is a Variant of the original who doesn't know any of her teammates, so we can probably expect a very different dynamic.

Saldana and Gillan will be joined by the returning Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Sean Gunn (Rocket/Kraglin), and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord/Starhawk, with Will Poulter on board as Adam Warlock and Peacemaker actor Chukwudi Iwuji in an undisclosed role.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 23, 2023.

I’d guess he would’ve been part of Star Hawks (Stallone’s) Ravenger crew.

@slickrickdesigns - that’s what assuming. It’s a shame nothing ever came with introducing those actors and characters

Eh..I don't really care for Darkhawk. Then again I've never really tried to read it..if having him in GOTG3 hinders and or steals a role from Nova and the old Guardians. I feel we should get them in before Darkhawk.

@HydraB0b - he’s like one of those marvel hero’s that are popular with people but marvel hope fans forget about him I was surprised they gave him another mini series but for years marvel did same thing with toxin made him gave him mini series not heard from again .

I like dark hawk he’s different he’s static shock of dc comics people like him but not enough popularity as he should get

Kang , namor, silver surfer and black knight have not made much impact in comics lately until marvel decide put some of them in movies and tv shows

@dragon316 - I think Namor has been heavily featured in the past decade. Maybe not so much with an ongoing but in Hickmans Avengers and New Avengers especially and then again in Jason Aaron's Avengers and Hickmans X-men featured him some too.

@RorMachine Can we honestly say that the dynamic between Variant Gamora and Nebula would be that much different in GOTG3? Considering in Endgame, they seemed to get along fairly well and trusted each other enough for Nebula to explain to Variant Gamora, that she and Peter were previously "a thing".

So? Usually when these characters appear it's for a minute with nothing to show.

The only characters that matter in the mcu are the original avengers excluding Hawkeye, Thanos, Asgardians, Spiderman and strange. Everyone else is just a side character or used for diversity bait

We might know something else. James Gunn revealed before he was rehired after being fired by Marvel that the story would also feature Rockets history.

That would be pretty cool, but I rather see a character like Phyla-Vell or Moondragon show up. Or maybe even Bug, although how that works rights-wise

I could almost swear he revealed this years ago and we all kind of forgot because it was so long ago, but I could just be thinking of something else...

Did he make the call to scrap Nova in a movie or was it the studio?
