BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is Now The Top Domestic Film Of Summer 2014

With Guardians of the Galaxy set to return to the #1 spot this weekend as Sin City: A Dame to Kill For flops, the James Gunn helmed Marvel Studios movie will also become the highest grossing summer movie of 2014 beating Transformers: Age of Extinction!

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is a flop and soppy teen flick If I Stay (starring Kick-Ass' Chloe Grace Moretz) is also underperforming. That leaves the door wide open for Guardians of the Galaxy to return to the top spot - where it will also beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - and break another record at the same time. After earning a total of $239 million by yesterday, the James Gunn helmed movie look set to pass $246 million today meaning that it will top Transformers: Age of Extinction's $243.3 million domestic haul. By the end of the weekend, the latest Marvel Studios movie should reach $252 million! Maleficent is now at third with $237 million and is followed by X-Men: Days of Future Past with $232.6 million and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' $203.2 million. Of course, Transformers: Age of Extinction remains the year's highest grossing movie worldwide with over $1.05 billion. Guardians of the Galaxy - which cost $170 million to produce - is still doing well with $430.7 million and has yet to open in China and Japan.

Maleficent just passed The X-Men at the world box office to make it the second highest grossing movie of the year behind only The Transformers. Maybe it's time to get Angelina in a new comic book movie.

Great for Guardians, but as much as it hurts me, I think at the worldwide box office TMNT is going to win.

I mean there is a ton of kids that were craving the TMNT movie but very few that knew about guardians.

Hasn't open up in japan, china, and I think about 7 or 8 other countries

It will already be close to 600 million by the time it does open up in those 9 countries

As much as I love my DC movies, seriouse WB/DC should be scratching their head on seeing this movie being a big success for marvel

Snooper - It's a good movie, but the quality of a movie doesn't determine whether or not it's a flop at the box office. Maybe under perform is a better word, but it's no where near a success at the box office.

As said in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes by Iron Man: "They're like the space Avengers" audiences love these team based superhero films. It's almost crazy to imagine that it still hasn't released in some places yet...

@Omega

Is it to early to predict GotG 2 making a billion in 2017(I finally notice Adam Warlock's cocoon was empty/destroyed in GotG post credit, so he has to be in sequel).
