Mattel Launches Its Own Film Division To Be Led By DALLAS BUYERS CLUB Producer Robbie Brenner

In an effort to compete with rivals Hasbro and LEGO, Mattel - who owns the right to Barbie, He-Man and more - has announced plans to launch its own film division under veteran producer Robbie Brenner...

By MarkCassidy - Sep 06, 2018 02:09 PM EST
Variety is reporting that Mattel Inc. is in the process of setting up Mattel Films, which will be a new division producing motion pictures based on its globally recognized franchises such as Barbie, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Hot Wheels and Max Steel.

The new division is to be headed up by Dallas Buyers Club producer Robbie Brenner, who will report to Ynon Kreiz, Mattel’s new chairman and CEO.

“Mattel is home to one of the world’s greatest portfolios of beloved franchises, and the creation of Mattel Films will allow us to unlock significant value across our IP,” said Kreiz. “Robbie is a gifted storyteller and a highly respected filmmaker with deep relationships in entertainment. She is the perfect leader to bring our celebrated brands to life.”

As we know, Sony was in the process of developing features based on Barbie and Masters of the Universe, but we're now hearing that the studio's options have expired on those properties, which means Mattel Films will likely wind up starting from scratch.

Sounds like good news to me. Can't see how a Barbie movie could work though. He-Man on the other hand, hell yes.

Not much has been said about that Barbie film for awhile. A few months back, Sony came out and said they had pushed back the movie until AT LEAST 2020.

Since then, they have made a lot of changes, including re-casting the lead role. It was originally supposed to be Amy Schumer (oh God), but they replaced her eventually with Anne Hathaway.

@LORDbuckethead

Hathaway could do something great with it. Still doubt I’d see that property in theaters but home viewing is not out of the question.

She carried Oceans 8 imo.

@regularmovieguy - I wasn't a fan of Ocean's 8 AT ALL, but Hathaway was by far the best character.

I think I'll be skipping the Barbie film in theaters as well.

@LORDbuckethead

Haha I agree. It was just a really boring movie with a wasted cast. Under Soderberg we could’ve gotten a better movie I’m sure.

As long as this means I get a great Masters of the Universe movie then I am totally on board.

@TheUnworthyThor - Well, to be honest, Beastmaster was closer to what a Masters of the Universe movie should have been!

I hate the fact that Filmation ' s He-Man cartoon has so strongly influenced the public's perception of what the property should be!

I watched this excellent Documentary on Netflix called Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the impact he had on Mattel.
It was fantastic and as someone who grew up watching the Cartoon really had the nostalgia factor for me.
Personally cannot wait for a He-Man film, hopefully made by fans of the cartoon Series and toys.

So if I get this right they are trying to do their own cinematic universe like Marvel, DC, Fox, Sony and Universal with their Dark World monsters and Legendary's Kaiju-esque creatures. (Fast and Furious too)

Hmm.

Hasbro realized a while back that the future is in managing IP and not making toys, especially with the rise of 3-D printers on the horizon. Looks like Mattel is following suit.

Give me a good He-Man trilogy with the first part being about Adam getting the sword and becoming He-Man to defeat Skeletor then the second be about the Snake-Men and the third being about Skeletor calling on Hordak and that’ll involve Adora becoming She-Ra then lead off into a She-Ra movie trilogy with cameos by He-Man and the Masters gang.

Max Steel sounds like a pornstar name.Masters Of The Universe could be cool.He-Man could crossover with Barbie,Ken wouldn't stand a chance with Barbie if He-Man was the alternative love interest.
