The live-action Masters of The Universe movie has taken another significant step towards the big screen.

After numerous false starts, Netflix was all set to develop feature adaptation of the beloved animated series back in 2022, but we recently learned that the latest attempt to get the project off the ground had also fallen by the wayside.

However, we'd later learn that Amazon/MGM Studios had acquired the movie, and a director is now on board.

According to Deadline, Bumblebee director Travis Knight is in final talks to helm, with Chris Butler set to rewrite the script from an initial draft by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Previously, the Nee Brothers (The Lost City) were attached to direct.

As far as we know, West Side Story actor Kyle Allen is still set to play He-Man (he may not be, but the trades haven't specified one way of the other), replacing the previously cast Noah Centineo (Black Adam), who parted ways with the film in 2022.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will produce, along with DeVon Franklin.

There have been several different takes on the original premise across multiple scripts since plans for a live-action adaptation were first announced, but last we heard, the story will focus on "an orphan named Adam, who discovers he is a prince destined to be the savior of a faraway land and must quickly learn of his power in order to save his home from the evil Skeletor."

Netflix reportedly spent almost $30 million in development costs over two years working on the project, before deciding to walk away when the budget, originally set for more than $200 million, could not be meaningfully reduced. A "significant theatrical release" is now being sought.

What do you make of this news? Any interest in a live-action He-Man movie? Drop us a comment down below.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe takes place on Eternia, a planet of magic, myth and fantasy. Its lead character is Prince Adam, the young son of Eternia's rulers, King Randor and Queen Marlena. Whenever Prince Adam holds the Sword of Power aloft and proclaims "By the Power of Grayskull! I have the power!” he is endowed with "fabulous secret powers" and transformed into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. Together with his close allies, Battle Cat (who undergoes a similar transformation from being Adam's cowardly pet tiger Cringer), The Sorceress, Teela, Man-At-Arms and Orko, He-Man uses his powers to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor. Skeletor's main goal is to conquer the mysterious fortress of Castle Grayskull, from which He-Man draws his powers. If successful, Skeletor would have enough power to rule all of Eternia and possibly the entire universe

Dolph Lundgren was acceptable in the role. Super jacked in the role

This is a beloved franchise with so much potential. They should take as much time as needed to do it right

@TREE24K - I'd be a little worried that MotU was established all way back in the 80s and the Netflix stuff really was underwhelming.
Long time since the beginning + not-so-great streaming shows = Not Interested.

Oh, I'm all in a live action one though!

Make it high fantasy, cast a big actor who looks like He-Man, and don’t degrade him to lift others up, like that atrocious animated show.

@mountainman - none of this will happen unfortunately.

Expectations are low but at least it can't be as bad as what Kevin Smith did.

HashTagSwagg - 2/14/2024, 8:49 PM
@mountainman - I hate to be in the minority with this opinion but no, shockingly I did not enjoy Kevin take on the He-man despite him being such a huge fan who grew up watching the series.

@HashTagSwagg - Strange how a fan of the original series decided to disrespect its main character so much.

I miss when Kevin Smith made good stuff back in the 90’s.

@mountainman - Bruce Willis broke his heart and then Seth Rogan got him hooked on the weed as a coping mechanism, some of his works failed before that but that was the point where he stopping giving a shit and was just in it for the money.

Cool!!.

I have yet to see Kubo & The Two Strings or any other work from his stop motion animation studio LAIKA but I did find Bumblebee enjoyable honestly…

It was easily one of the better Transformers films , if not the best one at that time (i haven’t seen the latest one yet).

As long as they keep that Kevin Smith away then maybe it could be good.

Make it an animated epic and reteam Knight with Laika Studios.

It would certainly give MotU it's own unique style/look compared to other typical CGI fare being made

Some of yall didn't watch Revolution and it shows. Yeah, Revelations was woke AF but Revolution was nothing like that. And it was fun.

He's top of the mountain for stop motion, he made a movie about Bumblebee work somehow, so I trust he'll also make this work. The newest D&D movie proved you can have fan service and still honor the material. If you have the right people

Hopefully they take some inspiration atleast from the 2002 show…

I was a fan of that.

@DocSpock - 45 year old me doesn't exclusively like serious grown up movies. I like cbms too and could even enjoy (atleast the visuals) in a well-done Masters of the universe movie. Just like with cbm's nostalgia is a strong factor.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 2/15/2024, 11:26 AM
@ElvenKingSlayer -

I kinda understand. I still love comic books & CBMs.

When I grew up in the early 60s, no CB character TV shows existed. No action figures existed except for G.I.Joe. and I never had or wanted that.

I understand there is a lot of nostalgia attached to such things since the 70s.

@DocSpock - One show I won't enjoy is the X-men'97. I didn't watch that kiddies show growing up. I grew up reading the comics the show is based on. Saw the show as an adult and its horrendous for a grown-up. Lots of people on this site however grew up watching the show instead of reading the comics. They still believe the show is good. Nostalgia is a strong thing.

Not that it would ever happen, but I’d love a Game of Throwns style take on Masters of the Universe.

I'd love to see a Master's of the Universe movie starring Alan Richtson. He's definitely got the ability to get into the right shape as he's shown in his Reacher series and if you dig deeper he's actually got a a lot range in his acting abilities. Just look at the difference he has shown from Blue Mountain State to Reacher and then check out his youtube channel and different interviews. I think he'd make an awesome He-Man.
