He-Man gets a Director

Masters Of The Universe has finally been dragged out of development hell by John Stevenson...

Warner bros and Joel Silver have officially picked John Stevenson to bring the muscle bound hero and his friends to the screen for the 2nd time..The less said about the 1987 movie the better!

Mattel head honcho Barry Waldo had this to say about Stevenson:

“I think it's fair to say, and knowing the epic nature of this script, you will see things you have never seen before. John has that creativity,”

Stevenson himself says:

“There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into, It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it!'

"We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

Good news for He fans then..or is it! Aparantly the concept has been "re-worked" and is now going to be about a soldier named Adam that stumbles into (Narnia style i would assume!) the magical world of Eternia were the evil Skeletor is trying to eradicate all magic.

I dont know about you guys, but i am sick to death of the stranger in a strange land bullshit that the studios feel they need to force down out throats so that we can more easily identify with the main character. Can you imagine if Peter Jackson had decided to make Frodo a young earthling who falls into a magical well and wakes up in the Shire?...course you cant. Obviously He-Man isnt regarded as being as important or as revered as LOTR, but i still dont see why these idiots think they can screw around with the mythology.

Anyway, just my 2...what do you fine folks think?

Totally agree with the whole Frodo/Narnia thing Ror.

Making super hero films as realistic as possible seems to be the thing these days. And in most cases it works (Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, etc.) I guess the thought is that if people watched these and thought "this could actually happen (with a slight stretch of the imagination)" then the film will appeal to a larger market.

In this case IT'S WRONG! If a He-Man film is to be made then do it right! He is the prince of Eternia, not a humble soldier! I sometimes wonder what these guys get paid for! Personally I thought the 1st film was ok, in a laughable cheese fest way, but hey, it was the 80s!

How about a Dolph cameo?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/2/2009, 9:39 AM
Well it wasnt the cheesyness that bothered me, i mean its He Man for gods sake. Its because they [frick]ed with the story..had everybody transported to earth and made up bad guys when they had perfectly good ones from the cartoon they could have used!...that and the acting..i mean i know He Man was a cartoon but did they have to cast one in the lead!

Ehh dude, Adam ain't no stupid human soldier stumbling down the rabbit hole. Here's a part of the script from latino review. Oh and i added the link for you guys to read because it actually does KICK MAJOR F**KING ASS!!!!

"At the Royal Palace, a colossal celebration is underway – the Anniversary of the Great Unrest commemorating Grayskull’s victory many centuries ago. YOUNG ADAM ( 14) is there – dirty blonde with striking blue eyes. He’s the kind of tough kid who acts first and thinks later. He is there with his father KING RANDOR (50s) –the kind of man you’d have to spend a lifetime living up to"

Well maybe that was the script in its early form before Marks did some tinkering, but this is the latest report on the movie from The Hollywood reporter via nuke the fridge

"Justin Marks penned the script, which skews more toward gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon magical world called Eternia. There, a being called Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating all traces of magic."

I just read over that post on Latino Review and it does indeed sound great, i really hope that script update is bogus now!

MarkCassidy - 2/2/2009, 12:01 PM
Dont worry comicsman, maybe She -Ra will make a cameo!

I just hope that whatever happens they stick some decent supporting characters in. Like even that script on latino review had Mekaneck as one of the heroes MEKANECK!..no Stratos or even Ram Man would have been better than a guy who can extent his neck!,,big help in a battle im sure.

But on the bad guy side of things they had Tri Clops, Trap jaw and Beastman which is cool..although Mer man was my personal fave

I heard that they wre gonna do the next he man in the style they did 300. I thinh thats the only way to so a kick ass fantasy version of He-man. mix some 300 visuals with Sin City threshold and silouhettes, I think they could make it CRAZY! no real world crap!

Hello again folks. Yay! Another He-Man movie. Which I personally think is great, because the He-Man universe is badass. HOWEVER, I do not like the let's make him a soldier who stumbles into this world of Eternia. BS! The thing that I actually LOVED about the first movie was Skeletor...That's IT! Him in that badass gold armor was freakin' awesome and his face REALLY didn't look bad for being 1987. The rest of the movie was garbage, but HE was cool.

As for the heroes and villains thing; Mechaneck sucked, in my adventures with the toys, he died, quite painfully I might add. Need some Man-At-Arms, Orko (NOT Gwildor from the movie, he sucked) Cringer/Battle Cat of course, Stratos and those Rock dudes. I dug them.

As for bad guys, I could go on and on, from Skeletors crew, to Hordak (who I actually like more than Skeletor) Skunkor, Beast Man, Trip Clops, Panthor of course, Spikor and Two-Bad. Oh, and that one guy as a toy you could take apart and put him back together in a shit ton of ways. Can't remember his name though...Oh well.

Just the fact this is being remade is good, the whole "stranger in a strange land" as ROR put it, not so good. I do not like that at all. This isn't freakin' "Inuyasha", "Narnia", "Pan's Labyrinth" or "A Yankee in King Arthur's Castle". NO NO, This be He-Man yo! Prince Adam, FROM Eternia, not stumbling upon Eternia so at the end we can see that it was ALL A DREAM. That would just make me shit my pants, seriously.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/2/2009, 2:52 PM
haha, that guy was modulok! i loved that toy too. man i wish i had kept all of those figures in there boxes, id prob be a millionaire now!..never mind the hundreds of original star wars toys i had...then again its hard to tell a 7 year old not to open a toy
Shaman
Shaman - 2/2/2009, 3:20 PM
Well from the statement you put up there roar, it doesn't say that he stumbles upon eternia. His destiny happens to be "in" eternia. And to say that he is a soldier, well he-man does fight for greyskull so the people who wrote this could be just nuttsacs finding words to describe a story they know nothing about.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/2/2009, 3:43 PM
Well "happening upon magical world called Eternia." suggests to me that hes not from there originally so straight away that sucks weather hes from earth or mars!

My original "stumbles" source was from total film, i just went to the latest one for my follow up comment. Hey i hope your right but i dont think so m,any diffrent sources are going to pluck the soldier from elsewer thing out of thin air. Course its possible one article just followed another (like i did here)..anyway that script seems fairly amazing so i really hope it stays as is

MODULOK! Yeeeea boy! I loved that toy. You're very right ROR, it's nigh impossible to tell any child of nay age not to open that toy up, or for them to come up with the conclusion themselves that in 20 or 30 years this is going to be worth TONS of money more than likely. Like my brother, he's about 8 years older than I, and he had the complete 1st, 2nd and 3rd lineups of the 80's GI Joe toy line...welllll, I either killed them all, or lost them, or sold them to my friends...Or, the best yet, I buried a bunch of them in our back yard...SO, technically you could probably go there today and dig up the backyard and find countless years of toy lines down there. From GI Joe to He Man to Transformers to freakin' Spiral Zone. I bet there are probably 5 (maybe) people on this site who even know what the hell Spiral Zone is without WIKI'ing it. Overlord was my favorite for those who do know...For those who don't, WIKI it...Or Google it, I don't even know if there IS a WIKI page for it...
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/2/2009, 4:54 PM
were they the toys that had faces on both sides of the head? and overlord was a blue guy?..i might be way off but he sounds familiar. lol, i myself have murdered many an innocent toy or buried them on the beach or sumthin!

Thats why about 10 years ago i started buying em and leaving them in there packs. its actually still tempting to open them even now. i have quite a few marvel legends figures, some are worth a few quid by now i reckon. I also have the original Spawn figures..god i really am a geek!

Frodo was a stranger in a strange land. Adventure isnt the life a hobbit chooses. He wants to sit back, hit his pipe and drink his butter beer, oh wait thats 'arry po'er, yet another example.

Spiral Zone, check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_Zone

I know, it's not a live link but I don't feel like doing the whole HTML thing. I'm lazy, sue me. But, I love ya anyways. Theres some pics of these guys somewhere on the net. They were action figures too obviously (Like Marvel Legends size or so) and they had CLOTH outfits...PLUS a few of them came with adventures on cassette which was cool.

Also, INSECTOOOOORS! Yea, they would have kicked He-Man and everyone elses ASS! For real. Wiki them too, those toys were the SHIIIIIIIIIZZY!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/3/2009, 11:49 AM
I had a few of them, the spider glove thing with the dude on top of him..and another lobster thing.

my all time favourite toys were Marshal Bravestar though

Ha BraveStarr was so freakin' awesome. I love the 80's early 90's cartoon lineup. I mean C'MON, how can you not?!

G I Joe, Transformers, ThunderCats, Tiger Sharks, Silver Hawks, Bionic 6, BraveStarr, Spiral Zone, Inhumanoids, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Go Bots, He-Man, She Ra..Seriously, we could go on forever with this list. NO decade before or since, tops the lineups then. I highly doubt there will EVER be a mix of cartoons to come out all around the same time that have the same impact on 2 or 3 generations that those did.

How I forgot about M.A.S.K. is just beyond me...My apologies to the cartoon gods. Also, as an addition I have to put in Exo-Squad. One of the BEST cartoons EVER. PLus, the series had an actual ending.

i couldnt agree more ion 80s and early 90s has the best cartoon line up yet...

haha funny, i just remember there was a cartoon of (WWF) World Wrestling Fed. during those times...haha i cant even remember a single episode...

here's a crazy thought from a crazy spider!!!

as ror says, adam was a soldier who happens to stumbled upon the magical world of eternia...maybe through a wardrobe or on a train station at platform 9 3/4
and later became the amazing HE-MAN Master of the Universe

and a shocking revelation of who Skeletor really was, his name was JOHNNY BLAZE!!!! who also happen to stumble on a magical world of Eternia by passing through a ring of fire after making a deal with the devil.

She-Ra? well, she fell from an "enchanted" opened sewer and again happen to stumble on a magical world of Eternia which enables her to have the strange super power! ...-she can attract animals by means of singing!

now im afraid to watch this on theater, i might fall asleep and VOILA! im also in the magical world of Eternia...see you there guys!

hahaha just kidding!

seriously im waiting who will play adam...a blonde gerard butler maybe..haha! joke!

Actually Pitt has signed for the role i believe!
IonParallax
IonParallax - 2/4/2009, 10:08 AM
Thanks Parascythe. Yea the WWF cartoon with Hulk and his big Pink Cadillac...Urrrgh.

That was a good story, MAYBE, just maybe, you'll find out that the well Kagome falls down into Fuedal Japan is ACTUALLY Fuedal Eternia...Skeletor has become known as Seshiomaru, Inuyasha is REALLY Prince Adam...and it all goes downhill from there.

Anyway, since SHAMAN mentioned Mr Pitt; did anyone see Burn After Reading? I just watched it a couple days ago and I thought it was HYSTERICAL. Good movie.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/4/2009, 10:40 AM
yeah i saw that, i thought it was very funny but the ending was far too abrupt.

Shaman has pitt signed for real??
Shaman
Shaman - 2/4/2009, 11:32 AM
I didn't see that yet ION :)

Yeah i believe he did. I remember reading heavily on that and it was my main argument to not have Pitt be Thor on my article, even though he'd be a great Thor, it's because he had already signed to play He-Man. I'd have to spend hours to research the article that confirmed it but it didn't sound like a rumour and i never heard it was debunked either.

THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 2/4/2009, 8:08 PM
Dude I still have that action fig...........somewhere.
And even though it was a little before my time I remember Blackstar. It was pretty cool, though short lived. I always thought that He-Man was a little to similar...hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. My brother got a blackstar 1st series action figure, and its still in the box.
I wish I had a Starsword.

haha, well you have to admit , considering what i paid for it its a good investment.

thehawk if your bro has that im sure its worth quite a bit.

anyway back to he man, im curious how they will handle the whole..adam to heman transformation in the movie..i mean even in the cartoon that was a stretch!
THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 2/5/2009, 5:47 PM
My bro is obsesive abou some things. He won't even let me get it appraised, hes scared I'd sell it or lose it. He has a pretty immpresive collection, his kids college fund he says. We all know he on't sell any of em ever.

Any way back to topic, I have high hopes for this movie, and I agree that some elements of this will be hard make realistic.

Hey if they use Evil-Lyn in it how about Megan Fox or Rose McGowan.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/6/2009, 7:50 AM
Haha, dont let shaman hear you mention Rose McGowan!

Megan Fox though, [frick] yeah! although she may be a bit young, i always thought of Evil lyn as being around 40...well i mean shes hundreds of years old..but looking about 40. But no, Fox is Evil Lyn!..shes also nearly every role shes mentioned for lol, the price of being a mildly talented ridiculously hot actress i guess.

THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 2/6/2009, 6:46 PM
What does shaman have against McGowan. And as for Fox's age, look what they did to Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button. They could make her look late 30's and still super hot.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/7/2009, 11:56 AM
Emmm..he always mentions pig vomit when he hears her name! youl have to ask the man himself. Personally i think shes pretty hot..in an end of the night pick up kind of way!
THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 2/7/2009, 9:07 PM
Yeah ror i agree. One of them go to her place tonight leave, before she wakes up relatonship. I looked at her resume, and Rose don't got the acting chops to bring the kind of publicity a star like Fox could.

FalconX2 - 2/21/2009, 11:12 PM
OMG, and here I was thinking I was the last Bravestarr fan on Earth!

If they want a good outline for a real He-Man movie, they need to take a number from the remakes that Cartoon Network had a few years ago. It was a good re-stylization, and per episode, the content was very fulfilling. It seemed to die on a sour note the last few episodes due to money and scheduling, but the first couple of seasons were awesome.

Why they gotta screw up another one of my faves!! This is apauling, naw let me call it what it is, this is F@%*$* up!!! What is this mess about he steps though a looking glass, this aint alice in wonderland, it frickin He-Man, and he is the Master of the Universe not some soldier from WWII, that would be Captain America. Are they serious?! No way this will ever work, it will suck and I will not see it. Brad Pitt better hope he didn't sign on for this cause it would ruin him. O.K. Nothing can ruin him but it'll hurt him big time. I hate whoever wrote that script. He better change it!!! He must be an Autobot, DEATH TO THE AUTOBOTS!!!!
