CHILD'S PLAY Reboot In The Works From The Director Of POLAROID & The Producers Of IT

Chucky has been haunting people's imaginations for the better part of 30 years, and now it appears as if the killer doll will be making a comeback in a new reboot from the same producing team behind IT.

MGM is currently working on a reboot of the popular slasher film, Child's Play. The classic horror franchise has been around since 1988 and has already produced several sequels, but the studio is looking to bring the creepy doll into the modern age.

Plot details are sparse, but Collider hears that the reboot will focus on the group of kids which they likened to the gang from Stranger Things. The doll will be technologically advanced and somehow find its way into the kid's world. There is no indication if the new doll will still be named Chucky, but Collider says it is likely.

The film has not begun casting yet, but signs seem to point to Brad Dourif returning to voice the psychotic doll as he has in all previous outings.

Child's Play has signed Polaroid director Lars Klevberg to helm the project, which will be written by Tyler Burton Smith. Joining them will be the producing duo of David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, the producers behind the It reboot.

There seems to be a small rights battle going on at the moment as well. Universal owns the home entertainment rights to the franchise, but MGM seems to have found a work-around to allow them to reboot the series, keep Universal happy and allow series creator Don Mancini to move forward with his  planned TV series.

As of right now there is no release date for the film.

This is interesting. The original scared me silly as a kid. It has to be a true horror film like the first one.

Didn’t they recently announce a tv show to follow the aftermath of Cult of Chucky?

@DrDafoe - yes they did, so this report makes no sense at all. Excited for the TV series.

Here's to Brad Dourif. World's most underrated actor. Would have loved to see him play The Joker.

Blah. They definitely need Brad Dourif. What makes Chucky Chucky is Dourif and his performance. Chucky is so damn mean and ruthless but astonishingly charming at the same time. He had people completely hooked the moment he blinked his eyes and started laying into Andy’s mom. The series would have been nothing without him.

@newhire13 - That is true, i remember seeing a documentary on the movie. Where they had Brad voicing chucky then they thought it was too cheesy, so they tried to get a woman to voice Chucky but they thought it was too girly so they just got Brad back.

Oh good another Remake I'll put on the list of Hollywood's pointless remakes which I won't see. And why the way isn't Universal already doing other sequels and a TV currently?

@CrazyJ - A TV adaptation of the original movie can be very interesting.

They can explore in more depth the past of Charles Lee Ray and his learning in the world of voodoo magic.

My Dad traumatized mE when I was 3 with the first Child's Play. I remember playing with my TMNT coin bank and I looked up at the Tv and that image of him screaming with an old man's voice took me twenty years to get over. I still get PTSD triggers seeing his face, I fought my fears so I could tell you this haha. Also my Dad thought it was funny, he'd say you better go to bed or Chucky will get you. And of course my name was Andy so I believed him! I've spent years trying to figure out scenarios to defeat him just in case, he still haunts my dreams but I don't lose anymore! And this is my only fear in this world, [frick] trump. CHUCKY IS THE REAL SCARY GINGER!

Well this was a long time coming. They rebooted every other horror movie icon so it was only a matter of time. However, I do remember reading a while back a reboot was planned but they decided to make Curse of Chucky instead and put this on the back burner.
The whole series freaked me out as a kid until I actually watched the original. Now I love it. One of my all time favorites. It's the first movie I watch during my horror movie marathon in October. I'll see how this new one pans out.

Was there already a soft reboot called cursed of chucky and it sequel cult chucks
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 7/4/2018, 4:17 PM
@zeon00 - nope, all 7 Chucky films are set in the same universe. Curse of Chucky is the sequel to Seed of Chucky, and Cult of Chucky picks up where Curse left off.

Unless it is brought back to proper horror then there is no point either way. And if it isn't scary people already have a tainted opinion on the franchise as legitimate horror.
