“What do you think the good people of Crystal Lake would say if they knew who you and Jason really were...”

The first full trailer for Peacock's Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, is now online.

The trailer introduces Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), who witnesses her badly deformed son Jason drowning (or appearing to drown) and sets out to exact bloody revenge on the teens who were supposed to be watching him.

We had been led to believe that Pamela would be handling the killing duties alone, but this teaser features a quick glimpse of what looks a lot like "Sackhead" Jason (the character didn't actually don the iconic hockey mask until Friday the 13th Part 3) running through the forest.

That shot of the yellow door also indicates that Jason may turn out to be some kind of failed Government super-weapon. Jason is traditionally depicted as a supernatural "zombie," but the expanded universe leans into genetic experimentation as an explanation for his apparent inability to be killed.

After spending over 15 years lying dormant at the bottom of a lake because of complicated rights issues tied to the character, the news broke last year that Jason Voorhees was finally set to return to terrorise a new group of teenage camp counsellors.

This take on Pamela Voorhees is described as "a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son."

Chucky and Long Bright River star Callum Vinson will play Jason as a child, and the cast also includes Nick Cordileone (Warrior), Joy Suprano (Fleishman is in Trouble), Danielle Kotch (Director’s Cut), and Phoenix Parnevik (Bel-Air) as future Voorhees victims Ralph, Rita, Claudette, and Barry.

"In many ways, it's a psychological thriller," showrunner Brad Caleb Kane said in a recent interview. "It's a paranoid '70s thriller. It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it's all done in service of character and theme and place and time."

"[Friday the 13th] out of the paranoid '70s thriller era. It came out of the mistrust-of-institutions era. It came out of the women's lib era, the National Organization for Women era, this consciousness-raising awakening era in America. I wanted to go and play with all of those themes," he added. "[Cardellini is] gonna shock and surprise a lot of people."

@Irregular - I kinda wish/hope they'd keep the Deadite connection. Least it was creative

@J0RELLC00LJ - Jason was connected to the Evil Dead series?! When what how?! That's cool

@Irregular - I actually prefer the other theory that Pamela did a spell with the Necronomicon and ended up cursing herself and when she died she became the puppeteer for Jason. And whenever she would lose control he would return to the shack waiting to be controlled by her again.

@J0RELLC00LJ - Yeah I prefer the more supernatural aspects of Jason.

@SonOfAGif - Yeah you see I KINDA prefer that over "a product of a government experiment/MKULTRA" trope since it's kinda "been there, done that."

I have a feeling though this is the outcome to distance itself away from the original F13 movies in terms of lore and create new for the brand...

That trailer actually looked shockingly excellent. I’m a huge horror fan, love Elm Street, Evil Dead, and Friday the 13th so I’ll have a to get Peacock for a few months to see this. Not sure how the rights work, but I’d love to see the Necronomicon, hints of the Nightmare on Elm Street world and Freddy, and basically loose ties to a New Line cinematic universe.

Leaning HARD into ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ is a full-circle slasher moment

Literally THE only soundtrack piece in Carpenter’s original Halloween

Glad to see Buck and Bloom gettin a little in their old(ish) age

Of all my fandoms, my biggest is actually horror movies. I've been a genre devotee for over four decades at this point and have seen more horror movies than I can count (or even remember lol). That said, while I like a few of the sequels, I've never been a huge Friday fan. But even so, this Paramount series is looking better and better. Shame we lost Victor Miller. I'm sure he would have loved to see how this show turns out.

Anyway, my concern is if they try to explain why Jason is unkillable (if they even go that route). What explanation would actually suffice without stretching credibility beyond the breaking point? Best to keep it simple and not try to build up some hokey witchcraft angle or, worse, some stupid demon worm baby thing.

There's this great little allegorical horror gem from the seventies called Deathdream (by Bob Clark, who also gave us the original Black Christmas and, interestingly, the classic A Christmas Story), about a guy who dies in 'Nam and his mother wishes for him to return home. Next thing you know he's at the front door, only he's...different. They don't go into any real explanation as to how we came back. And they didn't really need to. The movie worked very well without putting too fine a point on it or trying to offer up some mystical explanation.

I'd prefer that approach if they're going to end up having Jason come back as some unkillable thing. In her grief, she wished her son to return, and she gets her wish. That's all we'd need to know.

I also have no interest in some interconnecting universe with Evil Dead or Elm Street. Not everything movie or show has to be a "universe." Just let it be its own thing.
