GORE/VIOLENCE: Does this movie have good amounts of gore and violence? YES! From beginning to end in this movie, there is an insane amount of gore and an insane amount of violent, ravaging scenes. It truly lives up to the original in that aspect. Even though I've complained in another review I did about movies like Saw going way overboard with gore and violence, that is not the issue with this film. When going to see Evil Dead, you expect it to be full of bloody and disgusting and revolting moments! You just can't have Evil Dead without it! Now, I'm the type of guy who appreciates these type of things in horror and action movies, but I'll admit that there were a few things in particular in this film that had me bothered. I can't really say what parts were the goriest because if I did, I would pretty much be explaining the entire film from beginning to end. Trust me people, its not a bad thing ;)
On a scale of 1 to 10 Nathan Jones for gore/violence: 10/10 Nathan Jones
STORY/PLOT: It was there. 5 people come to a cabin to help Mia (Jane Levy) get over her addiction to drugs and end up releasing evil in the process. Do you really need any more detail than that? If you're an Evil Dead fan, you pretty much already know how this goes. Its a horror movie people, it doesn't need an award winning story or plot like you would find in Looper or Argo or Zero Dark Thirty.
On a scale of 1 to 10 Nathan Jones for story/plot: 7/10 Nathan Jones
WHAT I LIKED & DIDN'T LIKE
With every great movie, there will always be something about it that you don't like and wish that it wasn't in there. Evil Dead is no exception. I think its actually impossible to even have a movie that you consider to be the greatest movie of all time and NOT have something that makes you want to punch a baby in the face – Cam Brady style (The Campaign reference)
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
There was only one thing about this movie that really bothered me and I don't like one bit. To start, they bring a dog with them to the cabin (which already had me worried because I'm an animal lover and I know how these things go in horror movies) and of course, the dog dies. David (Shiloh Fernandez) discovers him whimpering (which really pissed me off) and it was dying. Apparently, Mia beat him badly with a hammer – whore.
WHAT I DID LIKE:
Pretty much everything, apart from the dog dying. I judge a lot of movies based on settings and surroundings and how the atmosphere is. Throughout the entire movie, its raining and to me, that is an ultimate win! They do quite a bit of outside scenes and you can see the dark skies and its down pouring. Also, to me, the violence and gore seemed just right for this film. There's so much of it but it doesn't annoy you. The casting was great and they all did a fantastic job! There's also one more thing that I thought was really cool and that was the after credits scene. Even though I give spoilers, this is something that I won't do. I'll let you experience the special after credits scene for yourselves!
So, what do I rate this movie? A solid **4 1/2 out of 5 Nathan Jones**
