EVIL DEAD RISE Director Says His Movie Is "Firmly In The Universe"; New Image Released

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin has confirmed that his movie is a part of the established universe - even though it won't feature iconic franchise hero Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell).

Still no sign of a trailer, but thanks to Total Film, we do have another promo still for Lee Cronin's upcoming horror "requel," Evil Dead Rise.

While chatting to the mag, Cronin revealed that his movie is very much set in the established Evil Dead universe (so we're assuming it'll disregard the 2013 remake), even though it will be missing a couple of key elements from those original films.

"It’s firmly in the universe," the director explains. "There’s a lot of fun callbacks, and there are direct lines to the past. But part of the goal of making this movie was to create something that could expand the Evil Dead universe further."

As expected, Bruce Campbell will not reprise his iconic role as the original trilogy's chainsaw-wielding hero, Ash Williams.

"There’s no Ash in this story and there’s no cabin in the woods, and they’re two iconic elements of what Evil Dead is," he added. "But the movie does include the book and an extraordinary amount of vicious, malevolent Deadites, so I was always pretty comfortable making that move [to LA]."

Evil Dead Rise is set to hit theaters on April 21, 2023. The horror flick will ditch the usual forest setting and move the gory action to the city, as "two estranged sisters’ reunion is cut short when flesh-possessing demons thrust them into a battle for survival."

Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Jungle) will play the lead roles.

Sam Raimi's microbudget original is still considered one of the best horror movies of all time, with direct sequels Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness as well as recent TV show Ash vs. The Evil Dead upping the comedic elements. The well-received 2013 remake was a far more serious affair, but it's not known which direction Rise will head in from a tonal standpoint.

I think its time to add this franchise to my "ignore list". There is only one Rocky movie for me, only one First Blood, only one Alien movie, only one Elmstreet movie, only one Halloween movie, only one Predator.

I think keeping it heavily connected to the original lore is a VERY good idea...if you can't have Bruce Campbell back, then you need to at least uplift the original trilogy to make it feel relevant still despite languishing in obscurity for 30 years. That way, you can boost the sales and views of the older films and show while making a clear starting point for more storytelling and world building with a new generation!

Can we get ONE sequel that is not reduced to nostalgia bait?

The 2013 evil dead was good. But i don’t why that one couldn’t be connected to the originals. I dont remember anything in it contradicting them.

Evil Dead might be the one consistantly great horror franchise. All three original movies are classics, the remake was suprisingly decent and the tv-show was great. All the other major franchises have at least one stinger, but not this one.

Hopefully this movie doesn't break the winning streak.

....alright so I can clearly expect the setting and the characters to appear as DLC for the new game.
