Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for a Friday the 13th prequel series, currently titled Crystal Lake.
This may seem like great news for fans of the popular slasher franchise on the surface, but there is a catch.
According to Variety, the showrunners do not have the rights to use any elements of the films established after the original 1980 classic, which includes Jason Vorhees’ iconic hockey mask.
So, what exactly would a Friday the 13th prequel entail? Well, we'll probably get to see a bunch of camp counsellors ignore a young Jason until he drowns and his mother plots her revenge! Doesn't really sound too exciting, does it?
Fortunately, the show will be written by Bryan Fuller, who will also serve as showrunner and executive producer. Victor Miller, who wrote the first movie, will also executive produce along with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24.
We're sure these guys will come up with something more engaging than the premise we outlined above, but it'll be very interesting to see how they do so without straying too far from the established canon.
“’Friday the 13th’ is one of the most iconic horror franchises in movie history and we were dying to revisit this story with our upcoming drama series ‘Crystal Lake,’” said Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We can’t wait to get to work with Bryan Fuller, a gifted, visionary creator who I’ve had the pleasure of being a longtime friend and collaborator, along with our incredible partners at A24, in this updated version for Peacock that will thrill long-standing fans of the franchise.”
