It's beeen 27 years since Stephen King's IT first hit the small screen with Tim Curry as Pennywise The Dancing Clown. The children of Deery, Maine were hunted and haunted by Pennywise, refered to by The Losers Club as "IT" until they finally put him to rest. Just as they returned years later so has Pennywise this time in his first big screen adaptation in 2017's IT.
Starring Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, this MA 15+ adaptation of Stephen King's masterful work sees the children of Deery once again haunted by the vicious and deadly clown only this time we get to see why he was so feared as there have been no holds barred in the way he extracts his hatred of children. Limbs fly, children die and there is a strong psychological weight throughout. The Losers Club, featuring an incredible cast including some of Hollywoods most promosing future stars, play a large role throughout and it is great to see their fears play out front and centre. In the 1990 small screen adaptation the fears were there but never fully understood, here the meaning behind each is clear and King's message from the book becomes more easily digestable as a result; this is ultimately a story about the relationship between the children of The Losers Club and their parents, most of whom are awful at filling that role.
With impressive direction, an intelligent use of CGI and effects that blend seamlessly allowing Pennywise to move in ever more creepy and spine tingling ways, IT isn't just a good thrill ride but a genuinely good movie. Though "horror" might be too strong a term to explain this film, IT is definitely the strongest "horror-esque" movie of the year in our book.
