AQUAMAN Director James Wan Is Developing A Mysterious New Monster Movie For Universal

Universal has tapped Aquaman director James Wan to develop a mysterious Monster movie with Supernatural writer Robbie Thompson penning the script. Details are few and far between, but here's what we know.

Coming off the success of The Invisible Man, Universal has tapped James Wan (Aquaman) to develop a mysterious new Monster movie. Wan won't direct the project, but he will produce via his Atomic Monster banner.

There's no title yet, but the story is said to focus on "a group of teens who discover that a neighbor is building a monster in his basement." Like Leigh Whannell's currently showing re-imagining, the film will "take its cues from Universal’s classic monster legacy and shine it through a modern prism"

This sounds like it could be a modern retelling of Frankenstein, but that remains to be seen. Either way, it's difficult to get too excited about this until we find out who'll be behind the camera.

Longtime Supernatural scribe Robbie Thompson is writing the script. THR's report also confirms that the studio has other Monster-related projects in the works from Dexter Fletcher, Paul Feig, and Elizabeth Banks, but provides no new details.

What do you guys make of this news? Do you think it'll be another take on Frankenstein or something completely new? Let us know in the comments.

After seeing The Invisible Man, I think this should be Universal’s new approach to their classic horror properties. Make low budget re-imaginings if the characters and don’t force them into a shared universe.

Given the details of this project, it most certainly going to be Frankenstein. Jason Blum expresses interest in doing that one just a few days ago so the timing makes sense.

Please be Creature from the Black Lagoon. He did great with Swamp Thing and I know he'd do phenomenal with this too.

James Wan as a producer doesn't mean anything, but it's cute that him and Whannell are both working on the Universal Monster films considering that they both started off their career on a million dollar horror film in 2004

"a group of teens who discover that a neighbor is building a monster in his basement."

Well gee, I cannot think for the life of me what story this could be?

Creature from the Black Lagoon. Make it like Anaconda or Predator but give it an environmental message. Maybe tie it into the forest fires in shed Amazon being the reason evidence of the creature was discovered..

This sounds like a Frankenstein movie from the description in the article.
