"They're coming to get you, Barbara!"

We first heard that a sequel to Night of the Living Dead was being shopped around back in October, and Deadline (via FearHQ) is now reporting that Amazon’s MGM division is in final negotiations to acquire worldwide rights to the project.

Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) will direct for Village Roadshow Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Westbrook, Origin Story and the late George A. Romero’s Sanibel Films. The Walking Dead‘s LaToya Morgan penned the script.

“The original version of Night of the Living Dead is still so resonant to this day,” said Jusu. “Every era has the zombie that it needs and right now, zombies reflect the ways that humans treat each other and show us who is truly the monster.”

Romero's 1968 classic is still considered one of the best, and most influential horror films of all time. Of course, the legendary filmmaker would go on to make several sequels himself - including the arguably even better Dawn of the Dead.

Plot details for this new movie are still under wraps, but from what we can gather, it will be more of a direct follow-up to the original, possibly even spinning out from the tragic final scene which saw sole survivor, Ben (Duane Jones), gunned down by a group of trigger-happy zombie hunters.

No release or production start dates just yet, but the film is expected to debut in theaters.

Everything is on the table now, ffs they're remaking THE EXORCIST! Horror excels because of originality, these will flop and they deserve to flop. Also while I'm at it, Barbarian was the worst movie of 2022.. I'd rather Morb than ever watch the plot hole filled nothing burger again

Or, you know, you can make your own zombie movie.

But then again, no one would care about it if it didn't have a popular IP slapped on it.

A sequel to Night of the Living Dead? Putting aside there have already been several and remakes of two of them, everyone in the movie died - what are you going to do? - it'll just be another in universe film to cash in on the name, not a sequel.

Add to that "the humans are the bad guys" has been done to death especially in TWD and from that quote feels very much like it will have a "message" in it about as subtle as a brick.

Happy if they make a good zombie movie, I'm all up for that, having just watched Train to Busan and 28 Weeks Later (not technically a zombie movie I know)

I preferred the first two O'Bannon's Return of the Living Dead over most of Romero's (Time of Day) of the Dead movies. Though the third Day of the Dead was pretty amusing.

And here I thought Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead, Land Of The Dead and so on we’re the sequels.

Dawn of the Dead (78) is the direct sequel.
