SCREAM 6 Star Hayden Panettiere Calls Melissa Barrera's Firing "Very Unfair And Upsetting"

Last year, the Scream franchise's producers, Spyglass Entertainment, fired Melissa Barrera for social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war. Now, Hayden Panettiere speaks out in defence of her co-star.

Scream lead Melissa Barrera was fired from the hit slasher franchise last year after sharing social media posts supporting Palestine in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Fans didn't take the news at all well and the project quickly fell apart, with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega also choosing to walk away from the upcoming seventh instalment. It's been widely reported that a pay dispute was the main issue for her, though rumour has it Ortega may have also left the movie as a means of showing solidarity with Barrera.

Either way, without its two leads, it was clear Scream 7 couldn't be made in its current form. Ultimately, even director Christopher Landon chose to exit the project, saying his decision came down to the fact that "it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare."

Spyglass is now attempting to woo back original star Neve Campbell, but will Scream 4 and Scream 6 star Hayden Panettiere show up as FBI Agent Kirby Reed again?

In a new interview with The Messenger (via FearHQ.com), Panettiere stopped sort of commenting on her future with Scream but made it clear she stands with Barrera (for context, her posts referred to the violence occurring in Gaza as "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing," sentiments which have been echoed by many actors in recent months).

Describing her co-star's firing as "very unfair and upsetting," Panettiere added, "After she [spoke out], then a whole bunch of other actors and people in the industry started to do the same thing, right? It was almost like she just did it earlier than everyone else."

"You know, a lot of people hadn't really asked her how she felt," the Heroes star continued, revealing she reached out to her and is "not worried" about the actress. "Melissa is such a badass as a human being and as an actress. She was hurt by it, but I think she took it in stride and was very, very gracious about it."

Scream 6 set the stage for Barrera's character to finally break with reality and become Ghostface, but short of Spyglass majorly changing course and publicly apologising to her for essentially describing her as an anti-semite, we don't see that story ever being told.

"I’m just so grateful for what I got to infuse in the franchise, and that’s something I’ll be proud of forever," Barrera recently said of her Scream exit. Asked how she feels about the support her co-stars have given her, she noted, "We’re family for life. If we’re ever in the vicinity of each other, we always find each other and that’s what happened at that event [the MPTF’s 17th Annual Evening Before Gala]."

"When we find each other, we just want to spend the night with each other, and nothing is ever going to change that."

Scream 7 does not have a confirmed release date.

I'd like to say 'bummer' for these hot, celebrity, high-money-earning-Hollywood actresses. I wonder how these poor pretty girls will land on their feet.

@lazlodaytona - If you criticize Israel, it is very hard to land back on your feet in Hollywood.

@LilJimmy - pretty much half of Hollywood is criticizing Israel.
While many studio heads have Jewish heritage (given historical circumstances) they’re not ALL fanatic zionists. There are enough aholes running rampant calling for one or the other side to get annihilated (like Noah Schnapp) but don’t mistake heritage for allegiance.

Rest assured big parts of the Jewish world are actively trying to dissuade Israel from furthering their goals.
I’ve been raised atheist but still have tons of family active in the community working close with Muslim groups in our country to do their best to keep the peace.

@LilJimmy - please. Kevin Spacey is already doing small, Indie flicks. Hollywood is simply full of self-involved, money-seizing, dumbasses who forgive you the next day as the day before you ran over their grandmother so the hollywoodists need to show being woke.

She’s not wrong. I’ve been a huge Scream fan since I saw the first film in the 5th grade (the sequels vary in quality but I’ve always had fun with them) but I’m actively rooting against Scream 7 because I want Spyglass to pay for their mistakes. Unless they make things right with Barrera and pay Neve/Jenna what they’re worth - I don’t see how I could get excited for a 7th film anyways. Big bummer.

Anyways - you can blame Gary Barber for nuking his own franchise. Stupid [frick].

@Superheromoviefan - "even if she was a nazi she shouldnt" that is just a stupid way of trying to make a point, really hope you just being extreme for the sake of the argument

@Urubrodi -
no, im not. do you think that a nazi should be fired from their work even if they didnt involve it?
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 9:50 AM
@Superheromoviefan - Yes, I do. Some ideologies have no place in today's society. She shouldn't have been fired for her comment, but yes, a Nazi shouldn't even be hired.

@Urubrodi -
i disagree. society is better when everyone is accepted. unless someone breaks the law, they should not be punished. "Some ideologies have no place in today's society" gives support to discrimination. for example imagine someone getting fired for supporting trans or women's rights.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 10:04 AM
@Superheromoviefan - Well there are ideologies and ideologies... supporting trans or women's rights and freaking Nazism are completely different things, we are not talking about religion or people who defend race/gender rights. Well in this one I guess let's just agree to disagree.

Spyglass just made a statement on Hayden's comments: "We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."

I don't work for any kind of industry that has to worry about celebrity culture, public image, whatever, but If I made comments on social media they don't like, I could be terminated. It's in the handbook. It's been like this since social media became a thing.

You guys need to stop calling everything "cancelling"

@TheCoonII - free Palestine. Stop genocide. 10,000 kid murdered by Israel since 7th October, and thousands more since the Nakba in 1948. Learn some history and some context before you show support for genocidal maniacs.

This is a good example of a tone-deaf studio executive throwing his weight around to punish an actor for their views just because he doesn't like them. She has every right to say what she wants and the studio exec who fired her can support Israel all he wants without firing her calling her an anti-semite for calling out ethnic cleansing. Hollwyood stars should blackmail Spyglass Entertainment and call out the exec who made the decision.
