Yesterday, a rumor that Neve Campbell had decided not to return for the next Scream movie gained a lot of traction online, and the actress has now confirmed that she will not reprise the role of Sidney Prescott.
Though no direct quotes were shared at the time, several sites reported that Campbell had been telling those in attendance at Monsterpalooza that she would not be back for the still untitled Scream 6, and the Wild Things star later followed-up with an official statement.
“As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
There's been some speculation that this could be a deliberate misdirect to allow the studio to bring Sidney in as the latest incarnation of Ghostface, and while that's certainly possible, it seems highly unlikely!
Melissa Barrera (Sam), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy), Mason Gooding (Chad), and Jenna Ortega (Tara) will return, with Scream 4's Hayden Panettiere set to reprise the role of Kirby. Dermot Mulroney recently became the latest cast member to sign on. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will also be back behind the camera.
Scream 6 is set to slice its way into theatres on March 31, 2023.
