THE BLACKENING: Slasher Movie Tropes Are Spoofed In Funny First Trailer - "We Can't All Die First"

The Blackening, a feature adaptation of 3Peat's hilarious 2018 short film, is set to hit theaters just in time for Juneteenth weekend, and the first trailer is now online.

The slasher spoof focuses on a group of friends who are stalked by a serial killer, who tells them they must play a game if they want to survive, before asking them to choose the "Blackest" member of their party as a sacrifice.

The concept is based on the old horror trope of killing-off the Black character early on, but they can't all die first!

The Blackening received positive reviews when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, but the reception to the trailer has been a little more mixed.

Check it out for yourselves below, and let us know what you think.

The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and screenplay and screen story by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) & Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

Directed by Tim Story, The Blackening stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, with Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji

@Superheromoviefan - Nothing is ever dead. They can always have a resurgence. Scary Movie 1 and 2 were hysterical and a lot of fun.

It wasn't until they started making parodies of every genre out there and making them low budget and unfunny that they died off.

Satires can still work. Like anything else, if it's done well it can shine. What we saw happen after after Scary Movie 3 was not done well.

Yeah, this premise is pretty weak for an entire movie. Should've just stuck to the short film or maybe a skit on something like snl.

Now to wait for comments calling me racist.

@Origame - how do you know it can’t work as a premise for a entire movie. Many movies have simple premises or lesser ones and they worked out.

The movie has the potential to be funny but its probably going to be corny with the same type of jokes, satire you would see on boring SNL. If this was made back in the 90's or 200's when directors could really push the envelope with the jokes, then it would be different. I'm black and this does not look that interesting at all for me to watch.

This was the funniest trailer I've seeb since Bodiesx3! I don't think this will be satire in the way of Scary Movie but moreso Cabin in the Woods. Plus I think it's interesting that we'll be getting a traditional holiday slasher for Juneteenth. I'm def looking forward to this.
