THE MUMMY Prequel Rumored To Be In The Works At Universal With Wes Tooke Penning The Script

We don't have much to go on here, but a prequel to Stephen Sommers' 1999 horror comedy, The Mummy, is rumored to be in the works at Universal Pictures...

Despite getting mixed reviews at the time, Stephen Sommers' The Mummy proved to be a decent (if unspectacular) hit when it was released back in 1999, and has remained a firm fan-favorite over the years.

Two direct sequels and a Scorpion King spin-off starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson weren't nearly as successful, and Universal Pictures' more recent reboot starring Tom Cruise bombed to such a degree that it closed the tomb on the studio's plans for a Dark Universe franchise after a single movie.

Even so, rumors persist that another Mummy movie is in development. Previous reports have claimed that a new reboot or direct sequel to the '99 original might be in the works, but insider Daniel Richtman believes the project is actually going to be a prequel.

We don't have much more to go on for the time being, but Wes Tooke (Midway, The Rescue) is said to be attached to pen the script.

A story set before the events of the first movie would, presumably, focus on the early life of the titular monster, Imhotep, or possibly Brendan Fraser's character Rick O'Connell and Rachel Weisz's Evie.

A prequel would also mean that another actor would be cast as a younger Rick, which might not be the wisest move given the resurgence in popularity Fraser has experienced over the past couple of years.

When asked if he might be interested in reprising his most famous role in a 2023 interview, The Whale actor seemed more than willing to return to battle the forces of darkness.

“I’m not opposed to it, I don’t know an actor who doesn’t want a job. I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life so sign me up!”

We'll have to see if anything comes of this, but fans of the original will get the chance to catch it on the big screen again (or for the first time) when The Mummy returns to theaters for its 25th anniversary on July 5.

Empire has released a new poster and trailer to mark the occasion, which you can check out below.

"The Mummy is a rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb, the hunters unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old legacy of terror, which is embodied in the vengeful reincarnation of an Egyptian priest who had been sentenced to an eternity as one of the living dead."

I rather just see them do a sequel. I don't mind a new protagonist (they could even use Alex), as long as Frasier and Weisz get to return. Think a South American setting could be fun

@bkmeijer1 - as much as I want them to take another go at adapting the original original, that sounds like a good way to build on the foundation of the Frasier ones

@bkmeijer1 - I would rather they leave it alone and try a different take but if so then a sequel sounds more interesting then a prequel..

having Weisz back is Key (Maria Bello did fine in 3 but it just wasn’t the same).

Funnily enough 4 was gonna be in South America with Antonio Banderas as the villain

@bkmeijer1 - which is exactly what was originally planned. Rick, Alex, Evie and Jonathan were supposed to go up against Antonio Banderas as some type of immortal conquistador

@TheVisionary25 @Blergh - I had no idea that was already planned. Now I kinda want that to become a reality

@bkmeijer1 - Maria Bello once revealed that they signed a contract for three movies (incl. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) and revealed that a leaked plot outline was real.

I wish they'd stop trying to milk this and just get someone passionate about remaking the 32 original and maybe the into the Dark Universe concept

No. Keep Brendan Fraser. And put him in the fat suit from the whale. Then at the end have him look in the camera and say "wow. All these mummies make me wanna lose weight". Then a doctor comes in saying "you know, Rick. Since you saved me, I'll be willing to give you a liposuction for free". That's when rick responds "that sounds nice, but we gotta wait a few minutes for the credits to role".

Where's my money universal?

I was in grad school when this came out, and I remember a bunch of us went and had a decent time, but thought it was pretty forgettable. I'm kind of amazed that it's still talked about. Perhaps it was better for people who saw it as kids?

No, the 1999 mummy was great. A Prequel to it is a horrible Idea.
