Mr Spock Reviews: IRON MAN 3

Since May last year Marvel has hyped the heck out of Iron Man 3, I’ve seen more Iron Man 3 TV spots than I can count. But finally, finally the new movie has made it’s way into theaters, finally we get to see Tony Stark, finally summer of 2013 has begun. But onto the topic at hand, does Iron Man 3 live up to the expectation? Read on to find out!

“Nothing’s been the same since New York”, I think that quote can sum up the whole “Comic Book Movie”, since last year’s The Avengers, superhero movies now have a huge amount if expectation, and for Shane Black (Director of Iron Man 3) this may have been very scary. Now I’m going to come out and say this now, I’m not a fan of The Avengers, I thought it was very cool, I mean seeing Hulk fight along side Thor was just amazing, but I don’t know why, but unlike 96% of the world I don’t like The Avengers all that much, so coming into Iron Man 3 I was very hesitant, would it be better than Avengers? Would it be worse? Let’s find out!

I’m going to try and not spoil anything, which is really hard considering the final act needs spoiling, but that’s not my job. Anyway, on to the movie. The last time we saw Mr Tony Stark he was smiling with his new science buddy Bruce Banner, not anymore. The Tony Stark we see in this film is unlike the previous films, the battle at New York has strongly changed Tony, as seen in the trailers and TV spots, Tony is suffering from anxiety which for our Armored Avenger is quite sad. Tony really has two big baddies in this film, and this sprouts the return of Iron Man! Now Iron Man 3 is based on the Iron Man storyline Extremis, in the storyline Guy Pearce’s character, Aldrich Killian, actually commits suicide, now being a PG-13 film, I think we all knew that wasn’t going to happen. The Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley doesn’t have his magical rings, personally I really didn’t care if he had them or not, The Mandarin is one of the greatest on screen villains in my eyes, the movie itself does a very good job at mixing multiple genres and themes as seen in the previous films (maybe not Iron Man 2) mixing genres like, action, drama, humor, buddy movie, superhero. So now let’s talk about how the actors did.

Needless to say that Robert Downey Jr handed in a top class performance as usual, but it was only in this film that I actually cared about Tony Stark, I haven’t really bought Marvel’s films recently, I loved Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor but that’s about it. So when I saw how much depth was given to Tony in this film I was very happy, Robert Downey Jr nails every joke, delivers some killer quotes and one liners, as usual Downey was perfect. Now onto the villains, Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin, let me just say that the whole “twist” thing wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but apart form that Kingsley just nails it, I would have liked to see more of The Mandarin but you can’t get everything! Guy Pearce.. Let’s just take a moment to appload this awesome dude, he was awesome, I can’t say I wasn’t creeped out by him at one or two points. Guy Pearce nails the humor and has fantastic chemistry with both Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. Rebecca Hall as Maya gave a performance which I thought was pretty great, she was funny, hot and smart all the best features of a female star. Another great performance was that of Don Cheadle, I just wish I got to see more of him, he's great when he's on screen, just a shame we didn't get enough 'Iron Patriot' I think I’m forgetting someone, and no it’s not Paul Bettney as Jarvis, but it is a little kid, Ty Simpkins, he was great. I mean that’s all I can really say, he is really, really awesome, he has awesome chemistry with Downey Jr and I can see him doing great things in the future, hopefully he doesn’t turn out to be another Macaulay Culkin.

The story is really quite interesting, but I cannot say much about it due to possible spoilers, I really don’t want to ruin the experience for any of you. But overall, Iron Man 3 hits the nail on the head and does a wonderful job at bringing the Armored Avenger back to the big screen, the 3D was stunning, the visual effects are down right amazing, so I can’t stress enough how good this film really was, with amazing performances, awesome effects, great action and hilarious humor, Iron Man 3 nails it on the head as far as superhero sequels are confirmed. I'm giving Iron Man 3 4.5/5, I thought it was downright fantastic.

saw the film about an hour ago, it just felt so lackluster and dull, the pacing in the movie just felt off. I think the main problem with this movie, is that it's just Tony Stark, there was hardly any exposition for any of the other character's, war machine, maya hansen and pepper were hardly in the movie.

I would give this a 6.5 rounded to 7/10, nothing memorable about the film at all. However the humor in the movie was good, and I thought the Mandarin plot twist was done well
