BOX OFFICE: JUSTICE LEAGUE Tops WONDER WOMAN On Thurs But Opening Weekend Projection Dips Below $100M
Justice League kicked off its run at the North American box office last night and while it performed admirably, weekend projects have now dipped well below early estimates of $110 million - $115 million.
Justice League opened in North America last night and made a solid $13 million. That means it exceeded expectations as it was initially estimated to make closer to $11 million, the same amount Wonder Woman scored back in June. However, whereas that went on to make $103.3 million during its opening weekend, the latest figures point to the superhero ensemble reaching only $95 million.
That's a big drop from the $110 million - $115 million analysts have been predicting all week and this figure means Justice League will have the lowest domestic debut of the five DC Films Universe movies to date. That doesn't bode well for the future of the franchise and is something of an embarrassment for Warner Bros. considering the fact Thor: Ragnarok debuted with $122.7 million this month.
They may be two very different movies but that features a Marvel B-Lister while Justice League boasts a cast of characters which includes heavy hitters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
It's possible that Justice League could actually do a little better than $95 million but this isn't a good result and the movie is going to need repeat viewing and good word of mouth over the next few days.
