RUMOR: Marvel Studios Eyeing This Horror Movie Director To Helm MIDNIGHT SUNS

There have been rumblings for several years now that Marvel Studios is developing a Midnight Suns movie revolving around the MCU's supernatural heroes.

It may have taken a big step forward recently, however, as scooper @MyTimeToShineH is claiming that Kevin Feige is keen on filmmaker Fede Álvarez taking the helm of the project.

He's no stranger to horror after directing Evil Dead, Don't Breathe, and the upcoming Alien: Romulus. He also wrote Don't Breathe 2 and penned the story for 2022's Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Given the positive buzz surrounding the next Alien movie, this rumour makes a lot of sense.

Interestingly, Werewolf by Night director and regular MCU composer Michael Giacchino is also said to be an option after his impressive work with the Marvel Studios Special Presentation.

The Midnight Suns, or Midnight Sons as they were then known, debuted in the early 1990s. Dealing with horror, occult, and supernatural elements, the tile explored a darker corner of the Marvel Universe.

The team typically consists of characters who are involved in battling supernatural threats, including Ghost Rider, Blade, Morbius, Doctor Strange, Werewolf by Night, Hannibal King, and Jennifer Kale.

"No. Look. A lot of those movies are cool and audiences are going and watching them," Álvarez said in 2016 about previously being in talks with Marvel Studios. "It’s just as a director it’s harder to have your vision in those, if you go and do a Marvel movie."

"At some point we were in conversations and...they already figured it out. They’ve figured out the style. They’ve figured out the way they shoot them. They’ve figured out the colors, the humor. What would I do? I enjoy a lot more freedom than that. I don’t know," the filmmaker continued. "Eventually I might. And it depends on probably the characters in the stories."

"But just something about my job as a director that I really enjoy is creating my own thing. It’s trying to do my own style when I shoot it and set the tone myself...Evil Dead was a challenge in that aspect."

In the MCU, there are several characters who could make up the Midnight Suns, including Moon Knight, Clea, Black Knight, and Man-Thing. However, with the next Avengers movies fast approaching, it's hard to say whether there will be time to introduce this team before Secret Wars.

Who do you think should helm Marvel Studios' Midnight Suns? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'm not even kiddin when i say that his work on that one-shot was more impressing than the totality of f*cking She-Hulk (not a highbar) or Moon Knight, reckon he's a fan of the genre!

What Giacchino did with Werewolf by Night is kinda what happens in comics when an artist writes his own damn stories and it's fire and even better than his pencil work, lel.

Like Murphy's Batman White Knight shit.

Know your forte, hombre.

Certainly an interesting and appropriate choice…

The only movie I have seen of his is Don’t Breathe which I enjoyed so i wouldn’t mind if he got the job even if i would prefer Giacchino given his work on WWBN.

The tone & sensibility he brought to that would make for a more interesting take on these characters I feel then Alvarez’s which I can already kinda see given his past work.

Yeah, they eye a horror director and ask the same director to do a Haunted House style of movie.

It was a huge mistake not embracing Scott Derrickson's vision for Strange 2. America Chavez... oh boy. That was a mistake.

Making Wanda a villain too. The things that she did in WandaVision were hard to forgive. At that point she didn't kill anyone but MoM have made Wanda irredeemable.

@MadThanos - Making Wanda a villian was not mistake, the mistake was doing Wanda visión before Multiverse of Madness, with the Fox,Sony-MCU crossovers a House of M movie would have been a better.narrative than whatever are doing with Kang.

Think Giacchino would be a great fit. Although I don't see Midnight Sons happen any earlier than Phase 7. It will happen eventually (that's a given that doesn't require some scooper online to tell me), just not soon

Feige is keen on having him. Okay. Everything in Alvarez’ quote suggests that he is or at least was not interested in doing an MCU movie. Of course that could change but there is nothing in this article to suggest that.

@RolandD - That quote was 2016. Phase 4 and beyond has allowed directors a lot more freedom. It's partly what has led to the backlash from fans who just want more of the Infinity Saga.
RolandD
RolandD - 5/5/2024, 12:49 PM
@Magus - And yet my point still stands. There is nothing in the article to suggest that Alvarez has changed his mind. In other words, there’s not really much of a story here.

@RolandD - Well, the scooper says Feige is interested in getting him for the project and the article included the quote from Alvarez which ends with "Eventually I might. And it depends on probably the characters in the stories.". His complain was not enough freedom and the current MCU allows much more.

Thats not nothing.

I'm 100% positive that Kevin Fiege will MUCK this up with LGBTQ content. The team will be mostly women with a female vlan and fail HARD with men getting the blame. I wanna be wrong but....

This would be great if they do it right. Also having these characters available to pop up in the wider MCU would be excellent.

midnight suns is not happening. we are barely getting the main shit to even get put into theaters let alone this. this is the type of project iger is not going to let happen because its such a risk. they cant even get blade out of the rewrite phase right now let alone a midnight suns movie. these rumors are just so out there now. Feige needs to release an updated official road map going forward. obviously a lot of shit on that last one aren't even happening anymore.
