Universal Pictures has officially unveiled the synopsis for their upcoming Tom Cruise-starrer The Mummy, the first installment in their planned Monster Movies Cinematic Universe, with promises of big things on the horizon. There aren't too many details provided, but we do get some idea at what to expect with Sofia Boutella's titular villain, and it definitely sounds like Universal is taking the upcoming reboot in a very new and exciting direction. Check it out below:
Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
"Gods and Monsters" - Ending with a nod to classic monster movie director James Whale is certainly a nice touch.
Production on the Alex Kurtzman-directed film is currently underway in London. Global megastar Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) is headlining the picture with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Marwan Kenzari (Ben-Hur), Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson), and Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys), who confirmed his role as Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hyde earlier tonight, co-starring. Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) penned the script.
