Back in April, we got the disappointing news that Warner Bros. had decided not to move forward with Ava DuVernay's New Gods movie. At the time, the trades indicated that the studio removed the project from the slate because there was "no natural space in the upcoming DC lineup," but we now have a little more to go on.

An interview snippet with DuVernay has been shared online, and while it's only a few seconds of the conversation, the filmmaker certainly appears to confirm that WB cancelled the film because it would have been too closely linked to Zack Snyder's Justice League. She doesn't mention "The Snyder Cut" by name, but it seems pretty obvious which movie she's talking about!

Find out what DuVernay had to say in the video clip below.

Many fans assumed Warner Bros. wanting to distance themselves from the "SnyderVerse" following the release of ZSJL must have had something to do with the studio shutting down the New Gods adaptation, so this probably won't come as much of a surprise. Even if DuVernay and co-writer Tom King had found a way to set their film apart from Snyder's vision, the mythology was probably too entrenched in the lore established in Justice League for WB's liking.

Maybe DuVernay will get the chance to revisit the project at some point, but for now, New Gods takes its place on the "what might have been" shelf.
