If you happen to check out this September's issue of Entertainment Weekly, you might just see under News and Notes This summers Winners and Losers. The question is where do our beloved CBM's fall into these categories. Well,, IMO there really shouldn't be any surprised here, but lets start off with

THE WINNERS
THOR
Captain America TFA
Rise of The Planet of The Apes
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-2

MARVEL had a very solid numbers with both Thor and Captain America making the list of Winners this summer. No surprise, I know. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-part 2- made the list of course being probably the best film released this summer. No surprises again, Right!! Well here's a surprise. Rise of the Planet of The Apes came out to be the sleeper hit this summer earning close to 256 million worldwide and still going. Most fans couldn't stand the idea of a prequel but as we've all learned ROTPOTA was very entertaining, and most are looking forward to a sequel.

THE LOSERS

Cowboy's and Aliens
Conan The Barbarian
Green Lantern

Cowboy's and Aliens- Many thought this would be the sleeper hit of the summer however, it turns out that James bond and Indiana Jones just couldn't cut the mustard. I was actually looking forward to something new and fresh out of this duo with Favreau directing yet it still left many feeling like we've seen it all before. Conan The Barbarian- This surprised me that with a more Cimmerian looking Conan most folks still can't seem to get old Arny out of there heads.
Green Lantern-Yes friends we all knew it was coming. Green lantern had problems from the beginning. With many believing Ryan Reynolds shouldn't have been cast to seeing the whole plot in the first trailer almost a year before it's release. Green Lantern proved that not all CBM's can just be slapped together with a pretty boy face and make tons of money.

Well folks there you have it. Now I'm sure many of you have noticed no mention of X-Men First Class or Transformers Dark of The Moon. This surprised me as well since both movies did quite well you would expect them to be on the winners list.

Be sure to check out this months September issue of Entertainment Weekly for more details

Conan The Barbarian shouldnt really surprise anyone cause it was directed by Marcus Nispel. Marcus Nispel film career is very poor. plus Conan was going to have a hard time at the box office also when most of the movies that was out is PG-13.

Where the [frick] is Xmen?! It was the most whined about film and the most Trolled Film on this site. It managed to surprise us all and make the Trolls eat their words... It is now the most critically successful superhero film of the year.. It deserves a spot on the winners list

That's kind of a sparse record to be entrusted with such a big-budget movie, imo.

@Superman17, that would be GL. Yes FC had a lot of hate too but GL was the most controversial on this site. But it doesn't matter because even though Fox did made it, it was still a Marvel property ;)

So Marvel was 2 for 2 (I don't count FC) this summer. Not a surprise because Marvel takes risks. Nobody thought Iron Man, Thor, and Cap would be this successful. Especially casting a black sheep in RDJ, the director of Elf, a no name in Hemsworth, and Johnny Storm from F4. Well maybe not nobody, cause the Marvel faithful believed ;)

After getting their ass kicked for so long WB finally jumped into the pool after all the other kids did. Sure Joss Whedon doesn't have a long resume as a feature film director. But History has proven that isn't always a sure bet (i.e. GL). I like that Marvel is a risk taker, but when you really study Whedon you know he is the right man for the Avengers. Don't hesitate WB/DC, take some risks. Timidity only gets you this...

As far as FC is concerned, under Fox's expectations in bombed money wise. That's the only reason why it's not mentioned.

@Greengo- Serenity is a film sequel to Firefly tv series. It makes better sense when you watch Firefly first.

After the Travesty that were two horrible Xmen films in a row..

People dish a lot on DC, but I don't blame them. WB has them by the balls... WB is the one thats afraid to take risks

Greengo

To sum up Serenity, it was a television movie released in theaters on a t.v. budget...and didn't Whedon have 2/3 shows canceled? He has written a couple fairly decent films ie. Toy Story, Alien Resurrection...but seriously, his talent for writing doesn't translate to directing at least not at this point in his career. Hope Avengers is decent though otherwise his film career is 0/2...
