Gerard Depardieu has been playing Obelix since the 90's, but Edouard Baer is new to the role of Asterix. He was previously played by Christian Clavier. THese movies are classics and actually good. The films are not based on comic strips btw..
They're based on complete comic books.
That's like saying a Superman movie is based on a comic strip.

It looks to me that hollywood is trying to ride the coat tails of thor. "Hey, people like thor and their like vikings and stuff. Lets find everything that has to do with vikings and sitch and milk it for all its worth. People are dumb, they'll watch it and like it, right? MONEY!!!!" Stupid hollywood, always chasing trends. Its sad really. Anyway, Thors gonna KICKASS!!!!!

Why is Asterix considered a 'Comic Strip' when there are around 30 Asterix comic books?

Also lots of Asterix animated movies which are fun to watch, the later ones are quite decent animation and very enjoyable.

1967 – Asterix the Gaul
1968 – Asterix and Cleopatra
1976 – The Twelve Tasks of Asterix
1985 – Asterix Versus Caesar
1986 – Asterix in Britain
1989 – Asterix and the Big Fight
1994 – Asterix Conquers America
2006 – Asterix and the Vikings
2014 – Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods

Nobody mentionned it, but Monica Belluci was in the second movie (Asterix and Cleopatra) in which she played the Egyptian queen. Her costumes were incredible!!!
