The summer of 2014 has seen films flourish oversees but, stateside, numbers are down from last year.
Still, it’s been a terrific summer for 20th Century Fox. Led by blockbusters like
X-Men: Days of Future Past and
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Fox has now become the first studio this year to reach $1 billion domestically.
Other releases include
Rio 2 and
The Other Woman in the spring. But the biggest surprise this summer has to be June's
The Fault in Our Stars, produced for $12M and grossing nearly $120M to date.
Fox can also include the $152M from
How to Train Your Dragon 2 thanks to a distribution pact with DreamWorks Animation. Fox will end its summer next month with the release of the R-rated comedy
Let's Be Cops.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened to a stellar $73M this weekend while
X-Men: Days of Future Past is approaching $230M domestically.
