CBS' modern day re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes has already found its lead detective in the form of Jonny Lee Miller and now Lucy Liu has been cast as "Joan Watson". Bet you didn't see that coming!

How are CBS planning on distinguishing their modern day re-imagining of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle creation from the BBC's hit series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman? By making John Watson a woman of course! Deadline reports that Lucy Liu will play "Joan Watson" opposite Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock; a character described as a former Scotland Yard consultant who finds himself in a New York City rehab centre. The female Watson meanwhile lives in Brooklyn and is a former surgeon who lost her license after the death of a patient while consulting for the NYPD. The pilot is written by Robert Doherty and directed by Michael Cuesta.

Ok ok, before the fan rage threatens to fry the site.. remember how people reacted when they found out Starbuck would be a woman in BSG, and remember how awesome the decision turned out to be? I realize she wasn't as iconic a character as Watson, but ya never know..might work. Prob won't..but it might!

@Ironpool007, seriously?! If they seriously want to try something different, they'd make something original that hasn't been done to death since it's origin in 1887.

Lucy Lui was awesome in Kill Bill, which is one more thing than Johnny Lee Miller has ever been awesome in.

I was fine with the series until now. A female Watson play by Lucy Liu?

Ror@ I'm sorry, the whopping 10 mins she was in Kill Bill was the easiest acting she's ever had to do. If you're gonna give her credit, Charlie's Angels was the closest thing to "good" acting she's ever come.

Rodimus, doesn't matter how long she was in it, she was convincing as a badass warrior chick..and actually kinda intimidating considering the size of her. In Charlies Angels she stood around smiling in a bikini. Yeah I know which one I'll give her props for!

I think it's so they can get away with all the sexual tension that comes from such a close partnership without having to worry about all the gay.

Besides, the templates been set plenty of times before: Benson and Stabler, Bones and Booth, Beckett and Castle, most of any CSI/NCIS/Law and Order series.

God damn you, United States of America television.

@Rodimus9

I'm not looking to a female Watson for sex appeal (although that pic ain't half bad).

Male or female, the thing about companion characters is that they have to be as appealing as the main protagonist. If they fall flat (because the performance falls flat in delivery), their constant presence is just an annoying element, and you're start waiting for the opportune storyline to see them get killed off.
