Multiple sources are reporting that Warner Bros. have enlisted the services of a pair of Academy Award-nominated filmmakers in Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) and Noah Baumbach (The Meyerowitz Stories) to co-write their upcoming live-action Barbie movie, which has Margot Robbie (Birds of Prey) attached to star as the titular doll.

While it's still early in the process, the studio is also reportedly eyeing Gerwig to direct the project, which is expected to hit theaters on May 8, 2020 - one week after the rumored release date for Marvel Studios' Black Widow.

In addition to starring, Robbie will also produce the feature along with Tom Ackerly of LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie Brenner of Mattel, Josey McNamara, and Ynon Kreiz.

HOLY SHIT!
I love, love love Noah Baumbach. Greta Gerwig's only directed one film so far, but it was really damn good. They really went out and made me excited for a Barbie film, huh?
Also, yeah, Margot Robbie is pretty much perfect casting.

@tmp3 - they both have some amazing “comic timing.”

Gerwig wrote some hilarity for China, IL...

This is career suicide for Robbie!

@Forthas - Greta Gerwig's last film got a 99% fresh and got five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. But ok, this is career suicide (squad), she should work with a real auteur like Simon Kinberg, right?

@tmp3 - What does her last film have to do with this? 1 I don't follow what "professional critics" gave her film...the AUDIENCE SCORE (read real score) is 79%. The film was not a fantasy or big budget production. She SHOULD work with Simon Kinberg...but not on a live action film about Barbie!

Forthas - 7/15/2019, 3:32 PM
@knocturnalzen10 - That would actually probably be Birds of Prey! So her career may be done before Barbie!

LOL! Forget about Tarantino/Scorsese/Baumbach/Gerwig, the Kinburger's where it's at!

What the actual [frick]? How on earth did they get Bombauch and Gerwig for Barbie???? Seriously you need Oscar winning awards caliber talent for Barbie?

This doesn't seem like the type of film that would get Gerwig and Baumbach to write for.

@WakandanQueen - Gerwig is being eyed to direct too... crazy times.

They should already get started on shooting this ASAP if they are aiming for a May release. Time can ridiculously go flying if not.

@Nebula - all jokes aside, did you see the film "About Time"? That was actually the first thing I ever saw Robbie in, only shortly before TWOW. it's wild, but for still that not being all that long ago, it's like already it feels quaint that she had such a small role in a film. But even aside from her natural talent perfect female specimin-ism, About Time was a fantastic movie. Easily in my top 10 of that year.

@CaptCoulson - I agree with everything you just said. About Time is great and Margot it just the most perfectly formed human being.

@E4Nigma - Margot Robbie's producing some pretty interesting projects between this & I, Tonya. Maybe there's hope for Birds of Prey yet? Maybe?

@tmp3 -

Maybe... Margot Robbie is a good actress. Hopefully they don't ruin "Birds of Prey."

I thought this was going to be the biggest joke of a movie but now Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig are attached to it. What is going on?

@tmp3 - 100% agree.
Me and a large group of friends went to see that at the theater together... we still reference lines from it... so good and really funny. Really captures divorce pretty well...

(I left a reference to this film in a comment to you in this thread already)
