Empire recently suggested that Viggo Mortensen (star of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) is too told for the adaption of Stephen King’s acclaimed "The Dark Tower" series. What do you think?

"Ron Howard has admitted that he’s thinking about casting Viggo Mortensen as Roland Deschain, the stoic gunslinger hero of Stephen King’s masterwork, The Dark Tower, in his upcoming three-part movie adaptation....

Viggo Mortensen, in case you aren’t aware, is an actor who was in The Lord of the Rings, and has therefore become the number one fanboy choice to play Roland, a dark and complex character whose drive to reach The Dark Tower, even if it costs him everything, propels the story. Actually, this may be one occasion on which the fanboys have it mostly right. Mortensen’s penchant for coldness and impassivity – not to mention the fact he would look darn cool in Roland’s cowboy duds – seems to fit the character perfectly, although we also have a soft spot for two of the other guys Howard seems to be considering, Hugh Jackman and Jon Hamm. After all, Mortensen is now 52 and might just be too old to twirl Roland’s guns. Might. Just."

I can't imagine getting any prominent actors like Mortensen or Jackman, or an actor like Hamm who currently has a TV series. The actor they hire will pretty much have to commit almost completely to this role for several years. No one who already has a good career is going to want to be chained to one project like that.

I kinda think he may be too old. This is a massive project, with a lot of action and stunts.I kinda think a 52 year old actor may not be up for years of this.

it depends. they can always get a younger actor for the flashbacks and stuff. but i think he's perfect. after all, in the Dark Tower series of books, Roland has been on his quest for quite a long time, and he IS older and grizzled.

I think viggo is perfect for this part. I also don't think he's your typical 50 something guy! I don't see why he can't handle this part. He's an amazing actor! If he would commit to it that is. I also really appreciate unknowns, its keeps your perception of The character From being clouded.
