The Past, Present, and Future of DC

Honestly I’d much rather be writing about the future of Marvel movies. We’re all probably more curious about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they’ve set it up with care and precision. But recent events have brought our minds to focus on DC. DC and Warner Brothers have not had a good track record with bringing us good cinema. In fact, they’ve sucked. They’ve made their money though because they’re more focused on toy marketing and know the general public will go see them anyway, possibly confusing Green Lantern or Jonah Hex with being part of the Avengers. However, DC has hands down given us the greatest superhero trilogy of all time. It’s hard to imagine that another trilogy will top that of The Dark Knight’s. So they’ve teased us, and it looked like the future was bright. Now these recent events have come into play. I’m going to focus on Batman in this piece and I’m actually going to take a risk and say the future still may be bright, just not what was expected. Don’t get me wrong, I went on a twitter rampage when I found out about Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman. I woke up that morning and thought I was having a nightmare. But the more I think about it the more I think it can work. We all hoped for Christian Bale’s return. Superman saved him at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, and the Nolanverse continues. Heck it would have been nice to see Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve after Batman Returns, but we got a recast in Val Kilmer. And he wasn’t bad. It wasn’t Tim Burton’s Batman though. It would have been awesome to see Tim Burton’s threequel with Michael Keaton, but we never will. It would have been awesome to see Chris Nolan and Christian Bale continue, but we will not get that. We’re going to have to go in to Batman vs. Superman expecting Batman Forever, and maybe, just maybe it will be better. Ben Affleck is a fantastic writer and director. Good Will Hunting is one of the best movies ever made. The Town and Argo are both great cinema and intense. Isn’t that what we want in Batman? Intensity? Affleck can bring it. The fact that he may have a part in writing (righting?) the future of Batman and other DC properties shows that DC and WB want to right the ship. He can bring more humanity to Superman and the rest of the Justice League. What we have here is a director who just won the Academy Award for being the best at it. Imagine what he can bring to the story and villains we haven’t seen in the Nolanverse. Riddler, Mad Hatter, Killer Croc are all crazy personalities and have intense detective stories waiting to be brought to life. That’s actually something we haven’t seen too much in the Nolanverse. Batman is a great detective, almost like Sherlock from the fantastic British series. That’s really how Bruce Wayne is in the comics, plus his training. There are many aspects and stories that haven’t been touched upon on film before. The bottom line is we’re getting a Batman and Superman movie in a few years. And it could be the start of something great for the DC Cinematic Universe. Affleck is a comic fan like us, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt due to his recent cinematic achievements. After all, his initials are BA.
