SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY - Here's How Much Money Disney Is Likely Going To Lose On The Movie

It's no secret at this point that Solo: A Star Wars Story has failed to take flight at the box office but just how much of a loss will Disney incur for the first commercial disappointment in the series?

As we've already told you, the signs are currently pointing to Solo: A Star Wars Story finishing its run at the worldwide box office with a disappointing $400 million. However, it looks like the smuggler is going to have to hit the Sabacc tables because one Wall Street analyst believes that the movie could lose more than $50 million for Disney and Lucasfilm. Others believe it could be as high as $80 million!

There are plenty of blockbusters which have lost more than that but this must still come as a shock to the studio as Star Wars is seen as such a bankable franchise. The budget ballooned to $250 million after Ron Howard was hired to reshoot nearly the entire thing and there was also a major multi-million dollar marketing campaign (which has surprisingly been blamed for its box office failings).

Disney has been left reeling after this loss because The Force Awakens grossed $2.068 billion, Rogue One scored $1.056 billion, and even the divisive The Last Jedi made an impressive $1.332 billion.

This loss won't ultimately hurt the studio because they've already had an amazing year courtesy of Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. However, don't be surprised if the studio reevaluates its approach to these spinoffs because Solo's performance is bound to have an impact on their outlook.

Still haven't watched it, and don't feel a lot of need to. But that pic does make me curious about Glover's Lando. Literally the only appealing prospect to me.

@Spock0Clock - its a good film, dont let the low performance and fan boycott cloud your judement. it is well made, great acting, and amazing music. highly recommended if you have money/time to spare. i recommend seeing it on a big screen becuz the set pieces and music are gorgeous. glovers lando is overrated his acting is too amateur and didnt like how he tried to imitate billy dee williams, his perdormance is similar to watching an snl sketch.

@Spock0Clock -
The film is boring and unnecessary. The characters aside from Han and Chewie are forgettable, and Lando's love for some SJW droid makes him trash.
This is why you don't meet your heroes. All of Han's mystique was dashed by this film. The legendary Kessel run turned out to be an overhyped event. Everything about Han Solo is overhyped.

@Spock0Clock - The film is a fun romp and it doesn't try to be anything more - that's a good thing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, Glover is just doing a Billy Dee impression, but that isn't a bad thing. Alden is the highlight, without a doubt.
I'd recommend this review for an honest, unbiased take:

50 to 80 million....that's it? I mean, it's a failure for Disney to have a SW movie on negative numbers for sure but....that's kind of pocket change for a company who made more that 3 billions on Marvel movies alone this year, and it's barely june.

@Spidey91 -
It's not just the money. Disney can't throw mobey at bad perceptions.

@Spidey91 -

Get the numbers right tho ... Just like 50 to 80 millions is a "loss", 3 billions is "revenue", NOT "profit".

They sure are gonna make a LOT of profit from MCU movies but remember revenue =/= profit.

@TheOtherOn - that is true. the profit from those movies is less than their revenue. but still, you also have other factors like home releases and merchandise. and when you think about all the things that make Disney money...50 to 80 million still sounds almost negligible.
sure, no one must be happy about it, but it's not like heads will roll or something.

@Battabing - the thing is...it wasn't even that bad received. I don't think it's a problem of "bad perceptions" (lets be real, Star Wars has suffered a problem of "bad perception" ever since the prequels, in an ever ending loop of "ruined forever!").
it was a poor marketing campaign mixed with a lack of interest in the movie specifically (a lack of interest present since way before the whole "TLJ raped my childhood" debacle).

So... one sixth of Infinity War's projected profit?

@blackandyellow - I can't see this image.

It's a blue image with white text on it, the largest being a 503 error.

It was going to happen sooner or later. And if they keep making Star Wars movies, it will happen again.

Maybe they should start listening (a little) more to 'the internet'. There seemed to be a smattering of interest, but most comments I remember were pretty skeptical of a Han Solo prequel. Like, top comment paraphrased - "Why?"

Meanwhile, people are clamoring for Knights of the Old Republic and they don't seem to want to touch it.
