The HIGHLANDER Reboot Returns To Life At Lionsgate With New Screenwriter

Ryan J. Condal, best known for writing Dwayne Johnson features Hercules and Rampage, has turned in a script for Lionsgate's Highlander reboot, which is expected to begin filming sooner than you think.

Per Deadline Hollywood, Lionsgate is feeling bullish about Ryan J. Condal's (Colony) script for the Highlander reboot, "quickening" the pace of production on the project for a potential Fall start date.

John Wick co-director and John Wick: Chapter 2 helmer  Chad Stahelski signed on to direct the film back in November 2016 and is apparently still attached.  Stahelski is slated to start production on the reboot after finishing up work on John Wick: Chapter 3 for a potential 2019 release.

Patrick Wachsberger, President of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group told Deadline “We’ve finally got a screenplay we’re happy with.  We have set up the story so it has sequel potential.”

Deadline additionally reports that Highlander is being set up as a potential trilogy and is drawing tonal comparisons to the John Wick franchise.  That of course, raises the question of whether the film will be PG-13 or R?

In addition to the Christopher Lambert Highlander films that began in 1986, a live-action TV series starring Adrian Paul ran for six seasons from 1992-98.  A Saturday morning cartoon ran for 2 seasons beginning in 1994 and a violent, anime film titled Highlander: The Search for Vengeance was released in 2007.

The best Highlander run was Adrian Paul on television.

I'm curious what they will do soundtrack wise for this. The music, especially the Queen stuff was pretty key for both the movies and the show.

@Zer0squad - Yep, and when Tessa dies in the show, Dust in the Wind from Kansas, really a classic.

If there can be only one, how can they reboot it?

@jrp6048 - Well, a reboot for one film could work. But setting up a sequel implies that the end of the first movie will not end with one immortal left. So if it tanks (and I feel it most definitely will), it will be an unfinished story.

Unless they redo the second movie, and nobody wants that.

@TomSolo - I completely agree with you on pretty much everything you said

Cool. Maybe this time they'll get an actual Scotsman to play the immortal Scotsman.

...eh, who am I kidding? It's going to be an Australian or something.

@SwingsetKnight - An immortal Australian now that would be something. Drinking beer until everyone passes out...everyone but one. "There can be only one!"
