Per Deadline Hollywood, Lionsgate is feeling bullish about Ryan J. Condal's (Colony) script for the Highlander reboot, "quickening" the pace of production on the project for a potential Fall start date.
John Wick co-director and John Wick: Chapter 2 helmer Chad Stahelski signed on to direct the film back in November 2016 and is apparently still attached. Stahelski is slated to start production on the reboot after finishing up work on John Wick: Chapter 3 for a potential 2019 release.
Patrick Wachsberger, President of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group told Deadline “We’ve finally got a screenplay we’re happy with. We have set up the story so it has sequel potential.”
Deadline additionally reports that Highlander is being set up as a potential trilogy and is drawing tonal comparisons to the John Wick franchise. That of course, raises the question of whether the film will be PG-13 or R?
In addition to the Christopher Lambert Highlander films that began in 1986, a live-action TV series starring Adrian Paul ran for six seasons from 1992-98. A Saturday morning cartoon ran for 2 seasons beginning in 1994 and a violent, anime film titled Highlander: The Search for Vengeance was released in 2007.
