Disney+ Scrapped A TRON TV Series From 12 YEARS A SLAVE Writer John Ridley

After TRON: Legacy underperformed at the box office, the chances of a sequel have always seemed slim, but it's now been revealed that we very nearly got a continuation of the franchise on Disney+...

According to an in-depth look at the future of Disney+ from The Hollywood Reporter, the newly launched streaming service recently pulled the plug on TRON TV series from Oscar-winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). Specifics about what it would have entailed haven't been revealed, but it being some sort continuation of TRON: Legacy (or an expansion of this world) is likely.

Ridley has an ABC Studios deal - which is why he was producing a still unrevealed Marvel TV show once upon a time - and that's why he was working on TRON. However, despite him devoting several months to the project, it was never officially given the green light from Disney.

Muppets Live Another Day and the Disney villains-themed Book of Enchantment were also scrapped, and while a number of projects have been moved to Hulu due to their non-PG-13 nature, it sounds like TRON won't be moving forward. That doesn't mean things won't change down the line, but the studio clearly didn't feel like Ridley's take was a good match for the streaming service.

The TRON franchise remains beloved among moviegoers despite the fact that there's only actually been two movies, and Disney+ does seem like a good fit for the property whether it's a film or TV show.

It's certainly a shame this didn't happen, but considering Ridley was also responsible for the terrible Ben-Hur remake, there's a possibility fans may have actually managed to dodge a bullet here.
