ALIEN Showrunner Noah Hawley Shares Intriguing New Details On Upcoming FX Series

The Alien franchise is heading to the small screen courtesy of a new FX series from Disney/20th Century Studios, and showrunner Noah Hawley has now shared some intriguing new details on the show.

Ridley Scott's Alien and James Cameron's more action-packed follow-up are undeniable classics, but it wouldn't be unfair to say that the franchise has declined in quality over the years. There was a lot of excitement when Scott decided to revisit the world he created back in 2012, and while Prometheus did take things in a bold new direction, it wasn't the terrifying return to form Xenomorph fans were hooping for (the less said about Alien: Covenant the better).

The now Disney-owned 20th Century Studios is planning to take Alien to the small screen for the first time with a new FX series, and showrunner Noah Hawley has shared some new details during an interview with Esquire.

Though the premise certainly sounds interesting, fans who prefer the more claustrophobic chills of the original films might be disappointed to hear that the show will focus more on the advancements in AI and a race to create cutting edge androids (sorry Bishop... artificial persons) than acid-secreting creatures chasing crew members through dimly-lit corridors.

"It's set on Earth of the future. At this moment, I describe that as Edison versus Westinghouse versus Tesla," Hawley tells Esquire. "Someone's going to monopolize electricity. We just don't know which one it is ... In the movies, we have this Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which is clearly also developing artificial intelligence-but what if there are other companies trying to look at immortality in a different way, with cyborg enhancements or transhuman downloads? Which of those technologies is going to win?"

"Alien is a fascinating story because it's not just a monster movie; it's about how we're trapped between the primordial past and the artificial intelligence of our future, where both trying to kill us," he continued. "As Sigourney Weaver said in that second movie, 'I don't know which species is worse. At least they don't [frick] each other over for a percentage.' Even if the show was 60% of the best horror-action on the planet, there's still 40% where we have to ask, 'What are we talking about it, beneath it all?' Thematically, it has to be interesting. It's humbling to get to play with the iconography of this world."

We're certainly intrigued by Hawley's comments, but what do you guys make of this update? Be sure to let us know in the usual place.

@Kucakingkai1991 - I'd love to hear what exactly "current woke shit" means. Most of the CW shows don't appeal to me, and some are pretty terribly written, but I find that a majority of the people that use the word woke do so because, for whatever personal reasons, they are vehemently against diversity, equality, representation, etc. that projects are aiming for with their cast or writing. Most normal people don't use that word in their everyday lingo.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yep. I’m not exactly a CW fan, but right wing reactionary channels love to project their view points and capitalize on the outrage economy. Huge red flag when someone says “woke” unironically

@tmp3 - yeah, totally agree. It [normally] immediately raises a red flag and slaps a label on someone.

@Kucakingkai1991 - That channel is a known drama account that over inflates controversies for views, I wouldn’t put much stake in what they say. They said they had inside info that Rooster Teeth would get shut down like over a year ago after their stories and it never happened. They practically make things up

@HeavyMetal4Life - ur on point with this comment. Hell what is the definition of “woke?” It means to be awake. And while true a lot of the CW shows are badly right because Batwoman changes skin color makes The CW “woke?” That doesn’t even make sense because The Flash is one of the most badly written shows out there but it doesn’t get lumped into a “woke” convo. Stop with the get broke stuff too because just because you’re not watching it doesn’t mean millions of other people aren’t. They’re just aren’t commenting everyday on these posts.

@HeavyMetal4Life - There is genuine annoyance I get from both sides of this stupid wing war 😂 people using “woke” as an insult towards literally anything, but also CW gets hate because of the sometimes awful writing man, like when a super-heroine was fighting a monster and she said something like “I didn’t give you consent” 😂😂 now I’m totally against non consensual sexual abuse and harassment but those kinda lines are so damn stupid.

HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 1/6/2022, 4:54 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - yeah, can't say I'm wowed by what he said above. It needs to be centralized around Xenomorphs. Explore other stuff sure, but if less than 50% of the story is about Xenomorphs, then this is designed to potentially fail.

Alien Covenant is an example of how focusing too much on AI in the alien world can jeopardize the story (there were many issues with that film, but David was certainly a big part).

@AmazingFILMporg - This.

That Weyland-Yutani stuff is what crippled Prometheus. Who the hell cares sbout an old, mummified guy and his useless ice princess daughter? The true focus of the franchise has to be the xenomorphs. Not just their threat to a few characters in the series, but also the possibility of them destroying humanity itself. Androids or whatever are a distraction from that.

Hawley probably wants androids for two reasons. First, he can create his own original characters. Second, they will be cheaper because he can use ordinary actors, not the CGI needed for xenomorphs. That's piss poor reasoning, imo.

This is a really good showrunner on one of the best (if not THE best) network. That has got me excited.

It'll feature a weponized, controllable xenomorph.

Then it will obviously get out of control.

Noah Hawley knocked it out of the [frick]ing park with Fargo S1 and 2. Hoping he can do the same with Alien.

Still haven’t finished S4 but I will one of these days.

Alien is a franchise at this point like Terminator where it’s just at the point where I think it’s run it’s course given there’s more bad than good. It’s sad to say because as someone who both like Dark Fate and was really interested in Neil Blomkamp’ Alien project there is still potential there but it’s more miss than hit sadly so people probably won’t care

I'm sold. I get he doesn't say it to spoil it, but throwing an alien in here is something that could have major repurcussions. I'm not sure, but do the people on Earth in the Alien franchise know aliens like those pale white dudes and xenomorphs exist? Could definitely be interesting

Does this IP really have that big of a fan base?
Or better yet, should this franchise have been milked as badly as it has been?

“Alien is a fascinating story because it's not just a monster movie; it's about how we're trapped between the primordial past and the artificial intelligence of our future”

The movies were never that deep.

This is just speak for “we don’t have the money to CGI an the Alien for every episode so had to come up with a plot that isn’t really focused on them to help with the budget”.
