James Cameron Calls Decision To Kill Off Newt, Hicks, & Bishop In Alien 3 The "Stupidest F*cking Thing"

Aliens director James Cameron didn't hold back when asked how he felt about David Fincher's Alien 3 during a recent appearance on Michael Biehn's podcast...

Though a lot of fans have come to embrace Alien 3 over the years (or have softened their stance somewhat, at least), the movie was met with considerable backlash when it was released in 1992.

The movie was not well-received on any level at the time (director David Fincher didn't want to be associated with it at all and asked to have his name removed from the credits), but certain creative decisions really pissed off the fanbase.

Originally conceived as more of a direct continuation of James Cameron's Aliens with a similar tone, 20th Century Fox ultimately decided to go much darker. Not only was Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) killed off in shocking fashion after a climactic battle with the Dog-Burster (or Ox-Burster, depending on which version you're watching) Xenomorph, but Corporal Dwayne Hicks (Michael Biehn) and Newt (Carrie Henn) didn't even make it past the opening credits.

Hicks, Aliens' only surviving Colonial Marine, and Newt, Ripley's young surrogate daughter, both die off-screen when the Sulaco's EEV crash-lands on a prison planet known as Fiorina 161. The badly damaged android, Bishop (Lance Henrickson), survives, but is later deactivated after being briefly brought back online by Ripley.

During a recent appearance on Biehn's podcast, Cameron didn't hold back when asked how he felt about Alien 3.

“I thought that was the stupidest [frick]ing thing. You build a lot of goodwill around the characters of Hicks and Newt and Bishop. And then the first thing they do in the next film is kill them all off, right? Really smart, guys. And replace them with a bunch of [frick]ing convicts that you hate and want to see die. Really clever.”

A few years ago, Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) was attached to helm a fifth Alien movie before plans fell through. The project would have served as a direct sequel to Aliens, disregarding the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection by reintroducing Ripley and Hicks.

Concept art did the rounds online, and there was a lot of support from fans of the iconic franchise, but when Ridley Scott decided to return to direct Alien: Covenant, the plug was pulled.

Blomkamp has previously expressed how disappointed he was that his idea for an Alien film never came to fruition, and it's clearly still something of a sore subject. During a 2023 interview with Uproxx to promote Gran Turismo, the filmmaker was quick to shut down a question about his now defunct movie and the direction the Alien franchise is heading in.

What do you make of Alien 3? Let us know in the comments.

@Pampero - He’s 1000 percent correct. Riley busted her ass keeping Newt alive and Hicks went through ton of crap too. Then they just off them in the opening. It’s ruins Aliens. All that was for nothing. They could have dropped them off at a space port and with a few small tweaks still had virtually the same Alien 3. All that said Cameron then let them do the Alexa’s same stupid thing to John Conner so it’s kind of hypocritical

Alien is the greatest horror movie of all time.
Aliens is the greatest sci-fi movie of all time.

What they did in Alien 3 is one of the biggest crimes in the history of Cinema.

This is why I will always consider Alien³ to be the worst in the Alien franchise.

This is why most fans hate Alien 3 and Resurrection. He’s right tho. Nobody wanted them to die and it was stupid as [frick]. That’s why when I introduce people to alien I only make them watch 1 and 2. 3 and 4 is a waste of time.

Blompkamp should have been able to make his film.. I'm a fan of sequels to older films that fix stuff people hated while adding to the lore.

Not to mention "Alien3" decided to go the CGI route with the xenomorphs for most of the shots instead of practical effects. Even back then it was painful to watch.

Thankfully James Cameron would never sign off on them killing John Connor off in a Terminator film.

Honestly, it raised the stakes for me. Like who knew what could happen if they didn’t make it out from the alien.

@skyshark03191 - Who was left to worry about after them though, you have Tywin before he was Tywin and then he gets immediately killed the second he gives his backstory and then you're left with a bunch of other Bald dudes and then Ripley, the star of the whole thing, not to mention they reveal shes got one in her and that the Alien ain't gonna kill her which deflates the danger for the later scenes with her and the Alien.

I agree but Cameron also produced Terminator Dark Fate, which did the exact same thing.

They should do what Blumhouse did with Halloween. Reboot it from where it continues after Aliens and make Alien3 and Resurrection just Hypersleep induced nightmares and have it take place with Ripley now older with Newt as her older adoptive daughter and have it take place where Weyland-Yutani is now a defunct organization who went bankrupt after Ripley, Hicks, and Newt exposed them for the events of Alien & Aliens. And the Colonial Marines discover that Weyland-Yutani had a secret facility with a Xenomorph in stasis.
